Moving everything away from US

They are not actually that bad: http://swedendedicated.com/dedicated-servers

I might pick up a few dedicated servers from these guys. But are they going to shut me down under pressure from another government?

Thanks!

I think there were 2 interventions from the police but they hadn't the proper papers. ISP refused to let them access the DC so police and firefighters tried to cut through the steel doors but couldn't get through. Later ISP sued the police and won in court. They got payed the expenses for the repairs :)

From what I know they have 2 rules:

  1. No child porn
  2. No terrorist-related stuff
They don't log anything from what I know.

Of course you should read everything yourself and not trust what I remember. I never used them myself so I can not give you a personal opinion. I just suggested them because I've read a while ago WikiLeaks and ThePirateBay uses them.

Guys, it's called adapting. The internet is too big of a force to control. Look at the countries that recently tried to censor protests? What happened there?

This is not the first time that filesharing and the integrity of the internet has been attacked nor will it be the last. There is too much money at stake for someone to not be willing to take the place of Megaupload, Filesonic, etc.

So they took down one kingpin? So what, it's not like there aren't another 10,000 people willing to step up and make millions.

I wonder if that guy had a DMCA or a cease and desist notice and ignored them?

Sucks for him though that they are making an example of him, I know at least 5 people from the U.K that had similar sites.

And since when did we deport people just because the U.S said they want them?

Its becoming a joke here, we can't get rid of preachers that incite racial hatred here while living off the taxpayer but as soon as a guy makes a poxy website with a few links to copyrighted material he is carted off to the U.S no questions asked!

UK has deported most anyone the US has asked for in the last 30 years, its fairly much a one way street and it certainly will not change anytime soon

Keeping a eye on that one!

Yep, seems that way probably got worse when Bush made Blair his pet poodle.

Was thinking of testing these guys out myself after all this shit started to go down, does anyone have any experience with them?

The thing with SOPA/PIPA is that in the US, the backbone of the net is owned by mainly Verizon and AT&T, thats what the whole internet runs on. You control that you control it all, unless there is a way to get arond that.

Someone needs to create a P2P type of wifi (or similar), that gets around the whole backbone issue.

Dude what about Charter and Comcast, they are way bigger then Verizon.

Do you think they know a difference between spam and social marketing? They don't even know what backlinks are or how the internet works. I used to advertise with megaupload. What is stopping them from hunting me down and suing me for "supporting" a "rogue" site and treating me like a culprit?

I'm not moving because I do something illegal. I'm moving because US has gone mad and I'm genuinely worried they might mistake me for a spammer/scammer/pirate/hacker or somebody else and there is absolutely nothing I'll be able to do about it.

I wouldn't worry. There's millions of others running legit sites. They're hardly going to put the whole world in jail over it.

Besides, they're only extraditing 1 person in the UK over a pirate site. It's his own fault. They took tvshack down and he decided to go and register more and more domains to keep the site up. He also did it all without protecting his identity.

When people start getting tortured over a screenshot of a video game, then we can all start to panic, but until then let's just relax. This doesn't affect business outside of movies/tv at ALL.

The problem with SOPA was not that it would prevent us making money online, it actually wouldn't have affected online marketers that much. Who it would have affected was regular people and sites sharing information like wikipedia or sites linking to other stuff like reddit.

It would have prevented the flow of free information. Most ways to make money online involve writing your own unique content, your own sales letters, building your own email lists or creating your own product. None of these things have anything to do with SOPA.

The whole SOPA thing was "the people vs them", not "The online marketers vs them".

How do you plan on getting paid? Are you going to open up a bank in North Korea then sign up to your affiliate network as a North Korean? I don't think you've thought this through.

Just relax and continue your business as usual.

Everyone just needs to relax. A lot of you are extremely paranoid.

I feel you on that man,

I feel like this new world can get you sued for anything. If sopa/pipa/acta pass, then copyright lawyers are going to be bringing in the dough.

Doing SEO for them would be bringing in the bank.

It's called being safe. This is one thing IM has taught me. I've been banned, scammed, had my domains pulled, payments rejected, warnings issued, content pulled down, countless DMCAs and threats, jumped, accounts suspended, money stolen by paypal etc.

Moving all your stuff to a secure server is not hard and it won't cost me that much extra. If it's that easy to do I'd rather be safe than sorry. IM is all about precautions. Multiple money streams, eggs in many baskets and backup plans. It's like getting a jab against small pox even though it's unlikely that you catch it. It's a precaution, not paranoia. If I had to bet money I would put $1000 on myself never needing that offshore server but I prefer to minimize the risk.

The server isn't the issue. How do you get paid? Your details are lodged with your affiliate company. They can easily subpoena your info.

You'd need to setup offshore servers/corps, and things just get very complex.

If every legitimate business person needed to do that the world would be screwed up.

There's a difference between being safe and being paranoid. If you have to go to these lengths to protect your business against the US, then what you're doing can't be legit, otherwise surely every single business on earth is going to be under attack from the US, no?

And if they attack every legit business in the world, the economy would just come to a halt, then implode :)

Dude what about Charter and Comcast, they are way bigger then Verizon.

Ya youre right there are many more (Verizon, AT&T, Qwest, Level 3, Sprint Nextel, cable companies, smaller players), however Verizon and AT&T have the largest piece.

And if they keep gobbling up other smaller companies, they just keep getting more. But im sure it will be fine, they wont be able to get it all, or even a majority, to really cause any monopolistic damage or control.

Then you also got to look at who owns, Europe, Asia, africa, south america, etc.

The network is probably too large and complex to really worry about that i suppose.

Having worked on the backbone myself and built (with a team of course) the cellular network for Telus and Rogers in canada, Ive seen the insane complexity of the entire system here in canada. Funny thing is it wouldnt take much to take it all down. Luckily im not someone who would.

Does anyone miss the good ol days of BBS's ???

All that is there to see, is that sites like HMA are going to make a lot of money. They tried that once with online poker.

It might not make sense for you but it does for UK webmasters. For example piracy is a federal crime in US. In UK on the other hand you can legally run a links site and even if it was illegal to do so you would not be thrown to prison because of it. Now if I was to host in US or use a US domain extension US can pull me out of UK. If I host in Sweden and use an .eu extension they can't do anything about it. I live by UK laws. No US laws. By moving servers I'm making sure that US can't touch me if I break one of their laws I'm not aware of even if they know where I live and what my name is. I'm not trying to hide my identity, I'm trying to make sure I don't fall under the extradition law. I will continue running a legal business under UK laws.

With the direction our country is headed in, I just might have to move to Somalia. Hopefully I don't run into this guy though lol
