Well is it?

I have an older site about (2-3 years now) that I haven't touched in a while. I am currently working on a new site and a couple of articles would work great with my niche so I am thinking of moving them.

Currently the old sites article is ranking on page 5 for the keyword I targeted.

What course of action would you recommend I take?

Just to be on the safe-side I would probably delete them from the old site, wait until Google deindexes them and then stick them up on the new site. Don't know if that would really be necessary, but it's what I'd do.

Thanks guys will remove the content and repost!

Remove the article from your old site, wait for it to be deindexed, then move over if you really must.

How about permanently redirecting (301) it to the other domain so ranking wont be lost instead of ranking it again on the new domain?

I agree with this method. That way, the page rank won't disappear and be transferred to the new site. That is of course if it's OK to you that the old and new site are somehow connected.
