Learn to drop motivation and cultivate discipline.

Motivation is waiting in the hopes that something is going to come along and give you the kick in the ass you need to get the ball rolling.

Discipline is finding the courage within yourself to take on the additional work and knowledge involved in achieving what you want on your own terms.

Define success. Then write a list of what is holding you back from achieving that success. Put your excuses aside, and power through until you are where you want to be.

It doesn't matter if you're just starting in IM or neck-deep in it 70 hours a week like I am. Get your head on straight, put the distractions down, and focus up. Don't wait for motivation.

Remember, every hour that you push something off is another hour closer to the end of your life. Leave something worthwhile behind when you go.

Hard to discipline without motivation.
I need both and I am motivated by what I do!

Using only discipline to force yourself into everything will deplete your willpower, you'll be burned out eventually. It's better to compromise a little and ideal if you can find a way to enjoy what you need to do.

But I agree motivation is useless.

Thanks for bringing up this point. Discipline and motivation are 2 completely different things and sadly due to poor upbringing many of us struggle to tell the difference.
I prefer the term morale instead of motivation when talking in the context 'motivation' is most commonly used in. Motivation has been diluted down to absolute meaningless by the interwebz, it's a buzzword now.
Morale, on the other hand, describes better what people who are 'demotivated' need.

Of course, to get started in anything you need a degree of discipline, and absolute discipline for big success, agree with OP completely. Discipline is doing, and morale is doing with enthusiasm and relative ease.

Feeling overwhelmed by work and having to resort to dreaming, praying, retrospection, music and podcasts etc etc. This is what improving morale or drawing strength is.
Without discipline, most won't even get far enough to work at anything, let alone feel overwhelmed by the work in question.

I'm fairly certain most people who look for that magic motivation are just sitting there paralyzed by analysis, thinking they can't do it, while in fact they had not even tried at all.

If you are struggling with 'motivation' you need discipline.
If you are struggling with 'discipline' you probably need 'motivation'.

As in all things, the world flipped everything on its head to destroy as many lives as possible.

Also, what happened to your profile pic? Building got blown up by terrorists :(?

preach on brotha! This is soooo true! Motivation is the cancer that is killing so many talented and skilled people out there in the world.

Discipline, consistency and hard work it´s all there is!

Absolutely we watch motivational videos and all that but the real motivation is around us, our mom cooks good food and the dedication she puts in making in the food. Similarly, we should also put the same dedication in our work and things are surely going to work out

Getting rid of the ILLUSION of CHOICE is a good first step too....

When people dangle the FORBIDDEN FRUIT of choice in front of themselves, they do what comes naturally: they slack, coast, and soon enough, DECAY.

When you put yourself in a position where you HAVE NO CHOICE but to LIVE or DIE, ADAPT or GET DESTROYED, you give yourself the best gift...

the gift of HONEST CLARITY

All excuses, presumptions, and blame finding melt away against the SEARING LIGHT of that moment of decision

And when you walk through that door...

You learn the power of COMMITMENT

The secret of success is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.

Cheers, Greg.

This is one of the greatest statements you can give to anyone. Keeping in mind that we are all gonna die anyways is one of the best teachers.
I think the commencement speech from Steve Jobs is great to listen to, because he also touches on this very subject. Not motivational but more something to listen & learn to :

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing, that’s why we recommend it daily.”

-Zig Ziglar

You still need to be motivated. What's wrong is having motivation and doing nothing.

I used to buy self-help books and they did nothing for me. But working my ass off changed my life.

So do something and when you see the results you will get motivated. The problem is that most people want motivation first before doing something.

The need for things is my motivation. When I know, I have a family to feed. I am going to work day and night. It's simple. I don't need motivation speech and all that shit.
