I did this as an experiment and it worked like a charm for me. Those interested can try too.

Step1

Find a government department (small ones are easy to work with) that has a website but doesn't have any ads on it. You can even pick a service providing private company. The website just needs to be advertisement free and receive a ton of traffic each day.

Hint - I chose a small Airlines website for the experiment.

Step 2

Go meet the officials responsible for running the site. In my case it was a tech guy from the IT team. Tell him you want to offer a FREE Fb fan page for the department and in return you'd just take up a small corner of the website for advertising related services.

They might not be interested in a FB fan page, but would definitely be interested in some hard cash every month. Tell them you'll pay them $500 (negotiation skills required) and it'll be just between you and the department personnel running the show. The FB fan page would basically be a decoy.

The department as a whole would know you've been offered the advertising space against an excellent FB Fan page, but in reality its the money that would get you the approval from those in charge.

In my case I had to submit a written proposal on my company letterhead mentioning the FB fan page thingy and it took some legwork to get approved finally after 6 weeks! But, it was worth it.

Step 3

Once you have the advertising rights head over to buysellads and sell the space. Just remember that the ads need to perfectly suitable for the website. You can't run computer hardware ads on an airlines site.

In my case it was a reputable travel company advertisement.

Enjoy your money and don't forget to pay the techies who got you approved.

PM me if you have any questions.

wow this is an awesome idea op!!

So can I ask you a couple questions??

How did you add the code, or did the tech guys do it?

What did your proposal letter say? Would you mind showing me a picture, I've never seen official letters really I usually avoid all junk mail and deal only on email, so it would be great to see the example...

Also how did you pay the guys, just cash? or via paypal? also how much traffic was the site getting, to make it worth $500 you must have been making at least double right??

Thanks again for the method and any extra info you could provide :)

Pretty niche, but congrats, this can be twisted as most government organisations are pretty protective with their websites.

Just be careful that this is legal in your area or you could have serious issues with law enforcement. In the USA it would be bribery and possibly a Federal crime.

Great idea if you can make it a legal one though.

Code addition part - they took care of that. I didn't want to mess with their codes.

The letter was an official proposal from my company to them in my letterhead. It was not an email, but a hard copy.

Earnings? I offered $250 to just one guy and made the FB fan page and earned $6k from the adspot :P

Payment I made them was cash at the guy's home.

idea is pretty dumb as you will easily get sued for things like that, am im right ??
There is reason why there is no ads in gov sites. and i doubt that tech guy will do t hat for such a small fee + huge risk of loosing job

Yes right. You need to do your ground work before proceeding. As far as I know bribery is a crime in every country, especially bribing Gov officials, but in my case firstly it was private and my research shows in most case the people managing the websites are private third parties. The gov just needs to its something against an awesome FB fan page.

Matter of fact in my case I got them some FB fans too.

The thing is, how come the tech guy just didnt take your code, figure out where it was from, and then cut you out the picture?

After all, we already know the guy has no morals, as he has accepted this proposal in the first place.

How long did it last??

Oh really? Please do your research before commenting. And please for God's sake try thinking out of the box. There are Gov sites that run advertisements and even call out tenders for advertisement space!

There are univ sites, service booking sites of all kinds, info portals...the sky is the limit. You are offering a FB fan page service for Christ's sake (including maintenance) and no one would offer that for free to a Gov site! The money part doesn't have to be the talk of the town.

C'mmon stop being so insanely dumb.

Ever heard of killing the goose for golden eggs? The guy wouldn't do it. In my case I manged to outsmart him. The thingy ran for 2 months and now I'm running the ad on the status check page of the airlines.

haha I c yeah.

I've dealt with tech guys at these kind of places before, and normally they always think they are really smart. The ones I have dealt with before would not have fallen for this. Your guys must have been pretty dumb, or perhaps it was someone you already knew??

One time, I tried to get a link from a national government funded chain of childcare premises.

I made them a real good offer, but it got drowned in months of bureaucracy and board meetings.

If you earned 6k, I imagine it must have been a big website, so it must have had a pretty big board presence, how did you get this proposal passed the board of directors/whatever?

You must have had a shit hot proposal letter!!

No the IT guy wasn't dumb...lemme lay out the full story then. These guys wanted their cursor to look like an airplane and implemented it because they thought that would give users a better experience.

The company who did this left behind and "powered by" link on the site for some link juice. They did a bad job hiding the link and I spotted it.

After several drinks at my cost me and the techie (he was basically a networking guy by qualification) guy agreed upon the $250/month deal.

But, he was concerned about how to place it in front of the company. He wanted more money to buy out some senior staff....after some negotiation I agreed to keep paying him for 6 months minimum and he'd make sure my proposal got approved.

The letter was really simple...the negotiation talk was "hot" LOL

I had to put in some effort behind this, but it paid off well.

The good part is, using the same channel I've now come in contact with a guy who's got a patented software to prevent overheating of hardware in the petrochem sector.

This guy now wants to pay me for placing his advertisement on some sites of his choice. He's helping me meet the right people, but I have to do the talking. Nothing's been finalized yet, but I hope to make some money off it soon.

Good luck getting anything done with gov workers where I live. You'd have to go through 10 layers of bribery, 20 layers of bureaucracy, 30 nephews... you get the idea...

As far as I know, pretty much everywhere, gov will pay 100 times more for something compared to market price, get 100 times lower quality in 100 times longer time. But, the "right" people get the 99 times more money difference.

@OP, I see a bright future for you when i look at my magic orb. In 10 years you're gonna be a politician. This is how it starts... low level. In 10 years from now you're not gonna get ad space for $250/mo, you're gonna get half of a small country for $250mil.
