Monetizing tumblr with ads

how many adult blogs did they have per account?
if they had multiple blog, was their main blog NSFW? (mine isn't, my main tumblr blog is about fashion)
what kind of ads were they using?
were they spam/junk blogs or copycat blogs?
were they using bots and posting 10+ posts per day?

This is valid information needed to know why a blog was taken down. I've assisted with wordpress support and tumblr isn't different, they look at a variety of factors before taking down a blog...its not clear across the board rules.

Actually tumblr guidelines doesn't forbid affiliate links and ads completely. They just don't want spammy ads and links. They don't want tumblrs that only have the purpose of doing affiliate marketing. I think well placed ads like adsense would be ok.

Unwanted ads refer to popunders or clicking on deceptive links that end up going to ads. Ads placed on the site in a couple places are fine. Companies and news sites would have no incentive to use tumblr if ads weren't allowed. The reason I asked the questions earlier was because Juicy Ads actually allows bloggers to add popunders and some of these blogs could have been using them. Unfortunately if an advertiser purchases ad space, their ads could have popunders if the blogger isn't paying attention, this could cause the blog to get reported. Several successful non-adult blogs even have ads and a few affiliate links that don't use adsense either, especially fashion & entertainment blogs. I think the issue occurs moreso when it becomes blatantly obvious that someone's account is used simply for making money because it'll have 5+ tumblr blogs posting the same content with ads all over the page.

Isn't using the click thru link to deviate people to your (non tumblr) website a deceptive mean to generate traffic?
And url shorteners? If I was Tumblr that's one of the first things I would forbid.
