Here is a picture of a prominent company missing the mark on branding/advertising their product. I use the product almost every day and every time I plug it into my computer I think this is nuts... no company name on the plug that I see each and every time I use it. The bottom guy has his name exposed but the top guy fails to do that for some crazy reason.

If you are going to advertise don't do this... make sure that your name is out there.

I do not believe in Universal Branding in a lot of instances but in this situation this company uses only a Universal Brand, and it makes sense due to it's target market being limited, but for some silly reason the hide their name on the underside of the USB port plug.

Don't be like that guy, take advantage of subliminal advertising.

To be fair, it's likely that the USB cable was a generic part bought in bulk, which probably made it significantly cheaper than making a custom contract to get branded cables, so for a smaller company it was probably worth it. I mean, how often have you looked at a USB cable and thought "Huh, that logo...I want to buy something from them right now"? haha.

Huge company that many in our industry know, and even use, and their company name is on the underside, Mr. Q.

If it was a generic cable I would agree with you 100% though.

Branding is not about getting a direct sale; it is more like subliminal advertising in a sense. Same with most radio advertising and most television campaigns; it is mainly to have your name in front of the prospect so that when it came time for them to make a purchase of that kind they would think of you.

I don't think I can remember more than a couple of clients that came to me from any radio (I did a ton of radio ads in my day) or TV ads (dabbled in the local markets for my products and services) but I know when I talked with the prospect they would say something to the effect of "Aren't you the guy that advertises on XYZ station?".

Ah I see, didn't know it was on the underside, that truly is an odd missed opportunity. I've heard a lot about that kind of subliminal marketing, and I guess it must work, all the big players do it, maybe I'm just a sheeple that isn't noticing how much it affects me, eh?
