I have implemented 2 Amazon ads;
1 to the right of my logo and 1 roughly half way down our homepage.

So, Home Page = 2 Ads
Article/Video = 1 Ad

The majority of people are landing on our Home Page - Interesting point regarding the 37 seconds/5 minutes.

Average pages per visit is around 2.
 
Decent design with built in video works great to increase the time user spends on your website. Also great articles and images do their job as well.
 
Give them every opportunity possible to continue exploring your site.

For example, interlink to other posts on your site directly in the content.

Add additional links at the bottom of the content to encourage them to click others.

Feature your most popular posts in the sidebars.

Do whatever you can think of to make them want to either read what page they're on, or at least continue to read another page on your site instead.
 
how about trying out a flyout? I would place it not at the end of the page (like the nytimes did) but maybe underneath your related posts. flyouts grap people's attention, even if there is a lot of text on the page. And if they click on related topics, they might stay longer - maybe worth a try :-)

You need to provide your readers with daily and high quality content. Think about it, who's going to read a blog which has no content and is boring to the reader.
