This method will work but you are better off just 301 redirecting the whole site to the main site. Rinse and repeat (ie build another site and get backlinks to it, you can even contact the same webmasters who gave you a link in the first place) By cloaking the search bots you really are playing with fire. It is not as simple as just checking google is in the useragent.
I may be wrong, but I believe that just redirecting the search engines is better because if you redirect the whole site, then webmasters that hold your backlinks will just delete your backlink for not displaying theirs - which defeats the whole purpose.

Depends on if they check.. they usually dont but do what you think is best. I just know that google has a tendency to find redirection if not done VERY WELL! and when you get de-indexed you lose more than just a few links from a few websites.
