Also want to thank you for this post (and the keyword one) - although you wrote the post some time back, looks like you got the balance right with optimization - I followed your advice and have been ok with the "over-optimization" updates. I had been focusing only on building backlinks, so this was a good reminder to get the onpage basic right. Thanks +rep.

Thanks for the very well put guide. I'm a visual person and the screen shots help a lot. I was about to create a thread asking for help in this same thing but decided to search it first. I'm glad I did. I did have a question about how many keywords to try to rank for in a single post/page but I think I'll read this guide and your Keyword Research guide first before asking.

I have a completion to make:
1. For the keyword density, this plugin counts only the words from the post you are writing, not from the page where your post is (singlepost.php). So, if you use another tool to see your keyword density on a post page, it could have a different value
2. Even if your website post page has H1 or H2 title designed to be displayed by the php code source (and not from the text editor), this plugin doesn't count them.
Anyway, this plugin is very useful. I am also using it.

I am using it with constantly with 3,5 - 5,5 % density for more than a year and everything it seems to be ok.

When you understand the basics then you don't need a plugin.
Just make sure you use your main keyword in H1, h2, italics, bold, underline at least 1 time.
Then you want to make sure you have your keyword mentioned at least 1 time for every 100 words.
So if the article is 1000 words, make sure the keyword is mentioned at least 10 times.
