Amazingly useful guide, thanks! Can't believe just found it.
Just one question (sorry if it was answered in one of the replies already), in step #5 you don't list what's the # that we should shoot to be under like you do in other steps. So, what # is good to be below?

The lower the number the better.
For someone new in SEO, I would say stick to under 20K until you get a taste, and you see "aaa this is how much effort I need to rank a keyword with this much competition..." then you can try one a little harder etc.

Please bear with me, as I'm a complete newbie at this, but I have a few questions:
1. The keyword tool page that I go to looks like the one on the screenshot but I can't get the "Estimated Avg. CPC" from "Columns". Any idea what I can do?
2. I'm assuming that in step 1 I'm just looking for the highest CPC? In your example, "how to do research" doesn't even show up on the list. So can you explain what you're doing on this step?
3. Why bother with going through step 3 to step 6? Step 7 seems to basically answer all your questions about your competition, right?
4. What happens if, say, in step 2 you get a result that's like 2,000,000, but then on step 7 you get a result that's only 4,000. Does that mean it's good or bad? Can you explain why it's good or bad? All the ones I keep looking up ends up being like this :/
5. Using a theoretical case, if these were the stats for my keyword phrase "grifter's awesome keyword", would this be considered good?
step 1: "grifter's awesome keyword" CPC = $3.04
step 2: "grifter's awesome keyword" = 40,000 results
step 3/4: &start=990 = 335 pages
step 5: intitle:"grifter's awesome keyword" = 19,800 results
step 6: inurl:"grifter's awesome keyword" = 24,000 results
step 7: inurl:"grifter's awesome keyword" intitle:"grifter's awesome keyword" = 1800 results

1. How much importance do you give to Traffic Travis ratings "relatively easy", "medium difficulty", etc?
2. Can you rank relative importance of the indicators you listed in the steps?
3. Is a keyword with 1000 local traffic and $1CPC <, >, or = a keyword with 100 local traffic with $10CPC, another words is traffic or CPC more important?

1) Test for yourself and get a feel. I personally don't pay too much attention to that.... but I do take a quick look. There are better and more accurate tools out there.
2) Well whats more important to you, traffic, or ranking easy. Each man to his own.
3) I dunno, is a 1 girl that loves you to the end of the world better than 10 super models ready to do anything you want, but just want you for your $$ and will f@ck off to the next person as soon as they can?

3) Well jump if you want, this by no means a Must step by step :/! I like to have as much info as possible....
If you just want to go from a to b then do it your way, I guess that is quicker.
4) Just means there are 2mil sites/pages some what related to your keyword, but Google only thinks 4K of them are really focused/targeted and those 4K will be your main competition.... If that makes sense.... I would say find a keyword that has less than 20K results in "quotes" to start of with... and you can test one with 2mil. and see what is easier to rank. Come on guys, TEST ffs! -_-
5) Its a good keyword, get EMD, upload 10 articles, do on page SEO, make a link with the keyword pointing to your main page from each page. Build some links.... and wait and see... and do more SEO if need be.

All I am saying is... we all have our preferences....
some want many bitches... some want 1 lady. Some want tons of traffic... some want easy to rank low competition keywords.

You have to consider the time and effort needed.
Just because CPC says $10, does not mean you will always get $5 clicks... In fact I bet most of the clicks would be around the $1 or lower mark.
Anyways, lets say you get 100 visitors and you get 10 clicks at $5 = $50 in a month.
Or you could get 1000 visitors and get 100 clicks at $.50 and still end up at $50.
But then again the $5, could not be accurate so maybe its $1 or $2 dollar per click you get for the first example ....
This is the sort of shit you need to test for yourself and you get a feeling for what works for you.
Personally have been doing high volume traffic rather than high CPC keywords.

Well my suggestion would be go after 1K - 10K keywords then with $1 CPC.

Nice keyword research guidelines though it's a bit time consuming.
If you have the right tool you can do steps 2-7 all with one click. The tool is called click cutter ( clickcutter.com) and it's free. If you are going to use it make sure you get the desktop version because it will allow you to perform all searches explained in the guideline with one click. Firefox version will not do that.
I've been using this tool for a couple of years and it's very handy when it comes to making searches with search operators.
