[Method] STEP by STEP Keyword Research for Newbies

I tried this method..Which was better than mine also time was saved a bit but don't know if it the keyword reached the first page..want to check that too..
Very simple and effective, but this is the 2ns step for me, I need some suggestions for the 1st one:
how do I know what keywords should I search for? from google trends? from twitter hot trends? is there any other source to find hot topics or should I just make my imagination work?

This is great, thanks for this! I have a question though, some of these sites have say 1000 backlinks. If I only do the social bookmarking and article type WH link building and say get 50 links, Does that count me out for these keywords, because the other site has 1000?
The real thing that I can't grasp is how to tell if you can compete with sites, based on how many backlinks they have. Obviously as a newbie I don't think I can be grabbing 2k links to the site.
What should I be looking at for backlinks? How many backlinks is too much to be able to compete with, knowing I'll only have around 50-100? I wan't these sites to stick around and not be banned, so I'm kinda staying away from the blog/ping, guestbooks etc.

Z-money, if you are going to make 50 using only your keyword as anchor text and the other sites that are ranking are not "on page optimized" and you have done your on page seo then its possible for you to out rank them.
I can not explain to you how you can assess the competition. Its a matter of experience and "feel". The more sites you work on the easier it gets for you to know if you have found a good keyword.
Just jump in and learn and fail, and learn some more until you win.

Hmm somebody should make a firefox plugin that adds the "&start=990" to the end of the url, I know theres one floating around to add on the end of youtube vids to make them show up in true stereo......
Anyone know how to do program FF extensions?
This method is cool though, much different from what I was doing before. I've found a bunch of keyword I wouldn't have thought about going for and they aren't like "eat bowls spaghetti" they are pretty readable. Will be interesting to see the results... I was starting to think all the niches were overused and there was nothing left!

An insanely useful and thorough guide... should help a lot of newbies get their keyword research right. Remember if you start with the right keywords you've already won half the battle.

Nice one, keep digging, new keywords pop up every month that where not there before. Just 2 months ago a new keyword popped up for my car niche from out of nowhere its getting 110K + exact searches (new car model related to my micro niche) and the competition is very low compared to the older keywords in that niche. Im all ready ranking top 10 and I only started working on it 3-4 weeks ago.
Many thanks man, thats right. Keyword research is half the battle. Next is presentation (article + on page seo + layout), and lastly promotion (off-page SEO) building links.

I followed this, but didnt see anything about how many local searches you shoudl look for, so I went with 900+. Mistake. They say, you take that number and divide it by 3 and thats how many monthly searches you will see, if in number 1 spot. So, for a 900 keyword, your looking at 300 per month. IF you are number 1.
So, my niche really doesn't have anything over like 6000 searches per month that are actually something I could compete for. My pages are in the top 10 and havent had a single hit yet.
Found out about the divide by 3 stuff AND that those numbers mean if you were NUMBER 1 slot, well found about that yesturday(too late).
Its damn hard to find anything with over 3k searches that you can compete for........
EDIT: JUST seen that it said in the picture, "see your ranking in the top 3" facepalm.
