Hi,
well there are 2 main reasons for going after longtailed keywords (2-3 words or more).
A) Just like you said, it is easier to rank those type of keywords.
B) If you can rank a keyword that is 3-4 words long you will also be working and semi ranking for the shorter version of that keyword!
Example: You work on ranking "Best car to buy", when you work on that keyword you are also automatically/in-directly working on "Best car" and once your ranking for the long tailed keyword it will be MUCH easier to rank for the shorter/tougher version of the keyword.

Introduction
I keep seeing people asking how to do keyword research so I have decided to do a quick over-view on how I do my own keyword research.
There are many ways to do keyword research, but its all about what you find works for you, and all method works to a degree so don't be too worried.
METHOD STEP BY STEP
1) Go to Google and type in your main keyword.
2) Press on your keyword and a new window should open with google and your keyword typed in it. Put your keywords in quotes and press enter, you should now see a figure, this number is showing you how many people are you competitors.
3/4) Put &start=990 to see how many pages google is showing with your keyword.
5) Insert intitle:"keyword" and press search to see how many of the competition have done on page SEO and have the keyword in the title on their page. (part of on page SEO).
6) Insert inurl:"keyword" and press search to see how many of the competition have put the keyword in the URL. (this is part of on page SEO and helps alot for ranking)
7) Insert inurl:"keyword" inurl"keyword" and press search and you will see how many people have done proper SEO and are REAL competitors for your keyword.
8) Lastly you want to go and see the PR and Age and links to see how tough the competition is for the real competition (on FIRST PAGE).
ALMOST DONE NOW....... ONLY 1 STEP LEFT......... GO AND TAKE ACTION AND FIND KEYWORDS UNTIL IT BECOMES 2ND NATURE TO YOU.

I have a question about putting the &start=990 after I do a search in quotes. In the example you gave, you said that anything less than 600-700 would be good. But, I just did a search for the keyword "money" in quotes, then I added that string behind it and it only gave me 94 pages. By your example, this would pass the test of the "&start=990" string. But, how could such a competitive keyword as money only have 94?
I'm sure I missed something about this along the way, but I have been racking my brain to try and figure out how that makes sense. Can you explain a little bit more in detail about that one area?

Shit! Edit, my above post. A little light bulb just went off inside my head and I've got it now. Although, to be fair, your example didn't explain it fully, or I'm just having an off night.
For those, like me, who was having an a brain fart, when IamNRE is talking about being under 600-700 he means all the results, not just the number at the bottom of the page.
To break it down further: When you get results from google for the keyword you typed, google returns 10 results per page. So, if that little number at the bottom of the page after you entered the string "&start=990" is 94 (as per my example with the kw money) that means 94 x the 10 results for each page or 940.
I know that seems trivial to some but I honestly didn't get it right away. Hope that helps and sorry about not getting it at first.
