Blog comments still hold of a lot of value to SEO and Google in 2016. Spamming them on niche relevant blogs on the other hand is poison for your money site. Most of your placed links won't even get approved!
Plus, which competitor would allow a link from their site to your site? My guess would be: no one!
The IM gurus are telling us that PBNs are the pinnacle of link building and that they are a massive ranking factor.
Well, to be honest, they are not all wrong. PBNs hold a massive power when done right. But you can't only rank with PBNs (which you probably knew). What would you think if I tell you that you can get backlinks from niche relevant blogs. Hell, even from your competition?
What comes to your mind when you think of link building via blog comments?
Probably one of these two:
- Automated stuff with GSA, Scrapebox, and other SEO tools
- Manually finding relevant posts on blogs and leaving a thoughtful comment with a link to your site
This is still very powerful. But how many times did you go back, only to find your link has been removed? Or even worse your comment didn't even get approved, deleted and gone forever.
I made 100 comments on niche relevant authority blogs and only 23 got approved. 8 of those had the link intact. Each comment was relevant to the article and written by yours truly. — YasharPlus, which competitor would allow a link from their site to your site? My guess would be: no one!

An 8% success rate isn't really satisfactory. You can do better, guranteed.

Please keep in mind that third party crawlers like Ahrefs, Majestic, and OSE will show <a>noText</a> as the anchor text. This is completely normal! As long as your link profile doesn't consist of only these types of comments and you still have diversity, you're good! Still, for most blogs your comments have to be approved. Which is not a big deal because your link won't even show in the approval section.
Sometimes blogs which run on WordPress have Askimet installed. It's a handy plugin that stops spam and will do a lot of other stuff to protect a website. Anyway, Askimet will show your sneaky link in an almost invisible, grayish color. Most authors will ignore this and approve you. Plus, Askimet isn't activated by default and yes: you can still get links with blogs running Askimet. If you notice that the blog is running this Plugin, try to go a little more conservative way with writing 2-3 sentences instead of just "thanks."
So, what can you take away from this?
- Link diversity is important
- Getting links from comments is so very easy
- You can get links on your competitors sites without them noticing (hah!)
