This post appeared first on my medium blog. You can check it out http://bit.ly/relevant-backlinks, if you want to.
I've found this method on http://seo.gl and curated and tested it.

    Here's my take on it.
    ---

Blog comments still hold of a lot of value to SEO and Google in 2016. Spamming them on niche relevant blogs on the other hand is poison for your money site. Most of your placed links won't even get approved!

Plus, which competitor would allow a link from their site to your site? My guess would be: no one!

The IM gurus are telling us that PBNs are the pinnacle of link building and that they are a massive ranking factor.
Well, to be honest, they are not all wrong. PBNs hold a massive power when done right. But you can't only rank with PBNs (which you probably knew). What would you think if I tell you that you can get backlinks from niche relevant blogs. Hell, even from your competition?
What comes to your mind when you think of link building via blog comments?

    Probably one of these two:
    - Automated stuff with GSA, Scrapebox, and other SEO tools
    - Manually finding relevant posts on blogs and leaving a thoughtful comment with a link to your site

This is still very powerful. But how many times did you go back, only to find your link has been removed? Or even worse your comment didn't even get approved, deleted and gone forever.

I made 100 comments on niche relevant authority blogs and only 23 got approved. 8 of those had the link intact. Each comment was relevant to the article and written by yours truly. — Yashar

An 8% success rate isn't really satisfactory. You can do better, guranteed.
It's sneaky, it works and it's amazing. It's the hidden link method

This method allows you to get links on niche relevant, authority sites. All without taking the time to write a good article with a natural link to your site in it. In the end, it comes to this line of code:

    <a href="http://yoursite.com"></a>

Sorry I've been teasing you the whole article for this line of code but it's worth it. The real magic bit is that it doesn't create an anchor text. Let's see how this looks in action.

Here's before I hit Post Comment
    [IMG]

    Here's after.

The link is gone! Did Wordpress delete it? Let's check the source of the webpage.
    BOOM! It's there!

The magic is done & you just got a valuable backlink. Congratulations!
Please keep in mind that third party crawlers like Ahrefs, Majestic, and OSE will show <a>noText</a> as the anchor text. This is completely normal! As long as your link profile doesn't consist of only these types of comments and you still have diversity, you're good! Still, for most blogs your comments have to be approved. Which is not a big deal because your link won't even show in the approval section.

Sometimes blogs which run on WordPress have Askimet installed. It's a handy plugin that stops spam and will do a lot of other stuff to protect a website. Anyway, Askimet will show your sneaky link in an almost invisible, grayish color. Most authors will ignore this and approve you. Plus, Askimet isn't activated by default and yes: you can still get links with blogs running Askimet. If you notice that the blog is running this Plugin, try to go a little more conservative way with writing 2-3 sentences instead of just "thanks."

So, what can you take away from this?
    - Link diversity is important
    - Getting links from comments is so very easy
    - You can get links on your competitors sites without them noticing (hah!)

    ---
This is all there is to it. I'm sure some of you knew it already but for the ones of you that didn't, well, here you go!

    Best regards,
    Dani

This is against Googles TOS (https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66353?hl=en). It can be useful if you build black hat links and short term rank and bank sites but in long term this isn't stable, from my point of view.

Yes, I know that this is black hat seo section, but it might not be clear for everyone! Great method for black hat SEO link building for sure! :)

    Nah
Then again, any sort of link building is against Google's TOS.

Well, I understand where you come from. There are some things that can be hidden and stuff that can't be. I can build a bomb ass looking PBN that looks like a real site, make relative blog comments and link back to my site and do all this things so they appear "naturally" in Google's eyes. But when they see that you get a lot of links without any anchor or that you don't provide anything useful in the backlinks you are building, you are playing a risky game.

Sure, this method have been used since the beginning of SEO and still works to a certain extent but Google is getting smarter day-by-day. Sure, spam works and you can spam and bank still, but for those who want to build a longterm business and implement this method will have a hard time. I just wanted to warn people, that might not be aware they are on the black hat section to not just use this trick on their site that they are trying to rank long term.

I don't say that OP isn't sharing something useful, just basically pointing out that you need to understand that this is risky and might not be the best way to build links if you are planning to go long-term with your site.

If you guys want to step the safety of those links up, don't link directly to your site.
Either do a 301-redirect or use a shortener service like bit.ly or something.

Can't you just put a link into the "." at the end of the sentence?
Would that make the method safer?

That takes away from the point of getting a backlink.

Now this method would be really effective when using Scrapebox since you can target many niche-related blogs and leave a discreet backlink on hundreds of websites.

The question remains, how big of a footprint is this and can Google penalize these links. My guess is that they already do unless proven otherwise.

I don't think it will be useful in 2016.
Google has a lot of Terms and Conditions you have to read.
