Meditation

I used to meditate, if you want real applicable results I'd skip the esoteric bullshit (humming, chanting) and just stare at a wall for 20 minutes, don't think, and focus on your breathing

The Eastern concept of meditating involves emptying your mind. The Western version (as per the Bible) stresses meditating and experiencing joy by filling your mind, specifically with thoughts about the presence of God, thanking Him for the blessings and favor you have received, and praying for more. The OP may benefit more from practicing contemplation and meditation in the biblical manner, rather than trying to hear one's own brain waves.
The thing is, I don't believe in god.It would be difficult for me to do meditation in biblical manner.

Yesterday I meditated for about 20minutes before going to bed. I must say it was one of the best sleeping experiences I've ever had. I felt relaxed when I went to bed, and I remember all of my dreams from the night clearly, I dreamt for quite a while. Which is a bonus, I really enjoy dreaming. I barely ever have nightmares, only good and positive stuff.
Now I just wake up and I'm going to meditate for about 30 minutes.

You can do ASTRAL MEDITATION if your mind/consciousness is powerful enough.

Meditation is great for bringing life back into context and sorting the wheat from the chaff.

One practice that I have found to strengthen and reinforce all of my goals is qigong I do qigong as a warmer for taiji quan which is my favourite martial art. The principles can be a bit much for some people to get their heads around but accepting that it is a great form of exercise is enough to gain the benefits

When people say that to meditate you simply focus on your breathing, I think that is only true when you're just starting out. I believe this is common advice because otherwise it is too hard to empty your mind completely. In my opinion, the goal of meditation is to empty your mind of thoughts completely - and by consciously trying to focus on your breathing, you're not really doing that.

Having said that, focusing only on your breathing and nothing else is still a ton better than having stray thoughts zoom around in your mind. So it is a step in the right direction, but with time, I think the idea is to also break away from focusing on your breathing and rather just letting your mind empty.

I have unfortunately not been meditating as much lately, but I find it takes me a good 5 to 10 minutes to usually get into a good state. I have had some uncommon experiences when meditating, feelings of moving around (even though I am physically sitting down) and feeling or seeing sensations in my mind. Obviously this does not sound like my mind has been emptied of all thought, but the experience is new and not common, so I let it be and try to enjoy it.

I usually do it right before sleeping (mainly because that's the only time I can get myself to set the time aside for it). It helps to meditate for 20 or so minutes right before bed, and then going to bed with a very relaxed mind.

I have heard that taking some nootropics, for example piracetam, can help with meditation progress. Can't say I have noticed any effect due to the piracetam, but then again I tend not to over analyse as I do not want to start creating placebo effects.

Hello BHW,
I want to start meditating, I want to be able to use my chi. Is there anyone here who meditates? If so could you give me some useful links, tricks, tutorials?
Also what do you think about meditation in general?
As for me, I think meditating will help me achieve full control of my mind and body.

Building up the power of Chi is only a small part of meditation process.

You can easily achieve that -- building a concentrated Chi force.

I have learned meditation when I was a kid, and that was very long time ago.:) It was during the time Enter the Dragon and other such martial arts movies were released...

You can learn those techniques from Bruce Lee related sites, especially where they show how he trained his body, mind and soul. His own teachings will show the real meaning that goes beyond the martial arts fighting techniques. Just giving you an example of what to search. You may go deeper into meditation and Chi-building techniques from there. It was around the same time that the oriental martial arts and its meditation base was revealed to the west. Not everything is still revealed to the world though, imho of course. Whatever is there is sufficient to achieve what you desire.

Of course, building the chi and building a great meditation foundation will help you achieve a lot more greater things, beyond what you desire in your OP. :)

To answer your question, yes I meditate. I chiefly meditate on relaxing my whole self first through some great techniques that I was very lucky enough to learn, and I also love to be an energetic conscious part of the whole (super) consciousness which I believe is the basic purpose of using meditation. It's kind of entering and staying for as long at an energetic level or dimension that is also paranormal (beyond normalcy as we know it), which is available to us easily imho.

I don't of course know if it is THE right technique, or if it will satisfy the many quests of wisest people on the topic, but it really helps me completely, and in a very wonderful and lovely way every time I do it. :)

How do you expect to experience true meditation when all you do is talk about meditation?

Sup 1337, I meditate for an hour everyday. Its part of my daily routine. What do I think of it? Well the human body is much more powerful than mainstream society believes it to be, and when I meditate its like giving my body a tune up every day. I do chakra balancing meditation for half an hour than I do a personal meditation for the other half. I believe meditation is the only way to achieve higher states of consciousness, especially if you want to tune into your chi energy.

This film is sorta long, but its probably the best piece I have watched about meditation and spirituality in general. I hope you check it out because its awesome. Theres 4 parts to it.

Thanks, I'm going to start watching it today. I've been busy this day with gym and buying domains.. This will help me relax I hope.

Try google for TTC Practicing Mindfullness course, you can get it free at piratebay. This course explain everything about meditating, its really helpful.

I don't find meditating is easy, it's really hard to concentrate even 5 minutes.

People over-complicate meditation. All you do is focus on your breathing.

You will get random thoughts; go back to just focusing on breathing.

Set a timer for 15-20 minutes. Every time your thoughts stray, go back to breathing.

As you develop the strength of your mind, your thoughts will stray less and less, and you will be able to focus on one thing (breathing).

After 15-20 minutes of focusing on breathing, allow your mind to wander. You will think thoughts through to completion.

My personal favorite topics to think about after meditation:

1. In what ways can I improve my life?
2. What should I be doing right now?
3. What are my ultimate goals?

After you can focus, thinking about those topics will change your life. 2-3 meditation sessions, followed by writing down what you learn, will have a permanent impact on your life.

Sometimes i relax on relaxing music, theres a lot on youtube, and pretty nice channels.

I guess I'm gonna try it later, it's so hard and boring. How the hell people can meditate for more than 1hour lol.

Well, anyone find smoking pot makes your mind relax and clear your thoughts?

That's it!

Here is a video, btw for all those starters like me...

Why not focus on thinking about those topics while meditating? Most people think about meditation in terms of meditating ON something, not self inducing an empty trance. You use the time you cultivate stillness to remove distractions that keep you from contemplating on the right things. You think less about yourself, in order to think more about a value, condition, God, whatever, outside of you.

Some of the eastern practitioners say they don't believe in God. Well, we western practitioners don't believe in chi. We think the way to reach spirituality or spiritual energy is go beyond breathing and self, and receive those things by letting the spirit of God better indwell them. Otherwise, the practice of 'emptying' just seems to be retreating from the spiritual, not the reverse.

focusing on the breath is one of the simplest ways of calming the mind

calm breathing = calm mind

There are many forms of meditation with different goals (or without any goals), different techniques, with/without religious influence etc.
I'm a fan of MBSR
(Mindfulness-based stress reduction) which is based on Buddhist meditation (but without including religious aspects) which had a very positive impact on my life. I think you should check the Wikipeda article about Meditation and then search further information about the things you find interesting.

This is mostly the thing I've been going this whole time.
Day 20: I'm more happy, I have a lot more energy, I feel way better about my self these days.
What I'm doing is , I do 20-30 minute meditation sessions before going to bed. Then I put a sleep timer on my phone, and I listen to calm music.
Meditation is really awesome.
