What have been your results experimenting with both, and which one wins?

Manual are best as google like slow natural adding of links.

You can force links with link bots with fesh proxy address.

Manual suppose to be better then any application.
 
A manual is always better. Sometimes automatic linking generates bad links on your website. That reduces your website performance.
 
From personal practice and observations, I can say that the manual approach allows you to achieve better results in the long run.
 
Manual is always good if you see from visitors point of view. They will land up to the correct page and it will be easy to navigate. however if you have many pages which is too difficult to handle and you need to do it only for the seo advantage, automated is the choice.
 
Manual is better. Even distribution compared to auto linking. Also auto is not really auto it takes time to setup. What auto does is once you set it up, you add a new post and if it has a keyword it will link it automatically to the target post.
 
I always use a manual method and find it better than auto. I think Google knows when anything automatic is used although you are'nt doing anything wrong really.

Obviously, manual interlinking is better.
Even LinkWhisper is shit as its suggestions suck.
Remember... you have to do it only once so it's worth it.

You can get use of both,
Using random, latest and/or related posts and a couple of "also read" links within the article are usually enough for the automatic approach,
Now, on top of these, you can add anchor links manually where it suits and depending on your needs
 
Automatic internal linking sucks and that's why I wrote a blog post about it. There are many problems with automatic internal linking like the usage of general terms with no specific intent and therefore, the CTR goes down dramatically.
 
I use LinkWhisper to check and manage the internal linking, but I do not use its auto linking suggestions.

I identify the orphaned posts with the help of LinkWhisper and then manually add internal links to it. This is the best approach because it gives me complete control over correct anchor text selection and managing number of inbound and outbound links.

So my suggestion is that Manual Interlinking is the best way to do it.
