Will this lead to google penalizing? Does this method work post g updates?

I use unique articles.

I can't speed up the approval process, I just wait.
 
The best way is to get a free tool called SEO PowerSuite and with that you can see the backlinks of your competitors and with his url's, you can create your own backlinks

Backlinking is an easy job, you can do article submission, blog commenting, forum posting and many more. Most easily just write unique content and try to sell it to the websites of the similar niche.
 
These auto approved blogs get spammed like mad.. so just judge the site before
