My GF is a super talented chick, and has been successful with selling her jewelry in her own store, but she wants to move in etsy because it's so damn hip. I just landed on their page where they spoonfeed all the newbs on how to rank for relevancy (haven't read it yet!), but I'm pretty sure it doesn't explain how to game it.

So is anyone here successful in etsy? Tips or suggestions before we start building her etsy campaign? Backlinking here, or social bookmarks?

    Thanks

Best Etsy tip: Use Pinterest and tumblr as much as possible using great tag words. you can look on "WeHeartIt" for popular search tags, they are similar top search phrases on pinterest and tumblr.

Thanks for the suggestion, we aren't up to date on pinterest but have some followers on tumblr and FB etc

Is it possible for an etsy store to rank in google for keywords like "handmade jewelry"?

Google likes to rank etsy search queries. Google "purple handmade jewelry" to see what I mean. I know nothing about the etsy search algorithm but it is the etsy algorithm you want to game. These etsy search query urls are all over Google so once you can rank in etsy, you can rank in Google. BTW, Etsy is #1 for "handmade jewelry" but you'll have to figure out how to get to the top of that Etsy category page.

    Thanks,

I know I need to game etsy, I'm wondering if they track outside links or what. I guess I should read up on those etsy ebooks, eh?

So I took a little look around and it seems that keyword stuffing is the ticket. Mention each keyword once in the title and twice in the description and you should be able to rank for a lot of terms on that site. That truly seems to be all there is to their algorithm, like Google 15 years ago.

What I would do is do normal keyword research around her products, see what Google has etsy search queries ranking for, then tailor her listings for those queries.

Thanks for taking the time to do that! I went back and started reading their guides to selling successfully, it's basic seo. Here's an exerpt from "Etsy SEO":

"Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a powerful tool that can help improve the visibility of your shop and item listings in search engine results for sites like Google, Bing and Yahoo. When shoppers are browsing the web, catching their attention through search engines is one way to bring more traffic to your Etsy shop.

SEO is complicated, and search engines frequently change the way terms are searched and the criteria for searches. There isn't a way to promise your shop will appear at the top of Google search results. However, there are some best practices that you can use to help improve your shop's SEO.
In 2009, Etsy worked closely with seomoz, a Search Engine Optimization consulting group, to improve overall SEO for Etsy. Together, we also created a helpful document for sellers, full of great tips and insights into how to enhance your shop for search engines and improve your rankings. On this page, we will cover the very basics of SEO best practices for Etsy shops. If you want to learn more about SEO, we recommend you read the full 25-page guide from SEOmoz which can be downloaded in PDF format by clicking {linkremoved}. (Note this file is 1.9 mb and may take a few minutes to download.)

SEO is an evolving process, so it's possible there will be updates to this guide."

It goes on to explain relevancy of optimized titles and descriptions, blah blah, until at the end it says this:

    "6. In-bound Links

Search engines like to show results that are relevant and interesting, but gauging "interestingness" is a bit tricky for a computer. While we don't know exactly how search engine algorithms calculate what makes a page interesting, we know that the number and quality of in-bound links to a page is important. In short: you want people to be writing about your shop and listings online and linking to your Etsy pages; this helps search engines know that people are interested in your content.
    7. Google Product Search Syndication
Etsy is proud to offer this service as a participant in the "google product search marketplace partner". As a partner in this program, item listings from participating Etsy sellers will appear in Google Product Search with the associated Etsy shop name and shop feedback visible and searchable."

What I'm getting for all this is that we can develop a link campaign targeting her keywords to her etsy shop, and it will boost her jewelry query rankings, hopefully to the tops! Good news, just what I wanted to hear!

Yeah like that one dude said using pinterest and tumblr are good cause people favorite the product and make it more relevant whether they even buy it or not. And I for one know I buy random cat things on etsy sometimes for no reason just cause I stumble upon them some how so it does work.

I do good on etsy, but legit with no bh. I buy at offline auctions, and I bought a big lot of something old that I repurposed into lights. I've sold alot of them, they made their money back quite awhile ago. I just made $59 today after shipping and materials for 4 orders placed by one buyer. If you're creative and work good with your mind and hands, you can do good.
As with bh, think outside the box.
