I've created a lot of lyric videos on YouTube and if you do it right its profitable.
Use Sony Vegas 11/12 for edit software.
Use background images from unsplash
Use dafont to choose a good font.
Keep it easy, people who are searching for lyric videos want to sing with the song. And don't want any special transitions.

Sometimes its possible to make a deal with the manager of the singer.
I've worked with some records/managers they whitelisted me to upoad my lyrics videos. 99% of the time you will not be enable to monetize it.

Here's my candid advice: don't go that route! Why? Same reason others have pointed out: copyright issues.
Do this instead: make a parody of the song. Those types of videos are insanely popular, especially if the song is that of a famous musician. Animation is usually best for this. Then, get someone on fiverr to reproduce the song, but this time, with some humor added to it. That way, the song is yours and you can monetize it however you deem fit. It does require some investment, but in the long run, it is super profitable as you'd be building yourself a brand with hundreds of thousands, if possible millions, of subscribers. It's something I toyed with awhile back, but didn't have the time to follow-up on.
