yes its an awesome and inspiring post!
However, the dominating of the top 10 spots without using your own domain seems a bit questionable.
Im sure you could throw up a few blogspot or turdy network sites to grab the top 10 for a few weeks. but how exactly can you sell them?
If i was paying 900 bucks for a no1 position i wouldnt want a digg post or a stumble, id want a site!

This is a great idea. Sounds like a whole lot of work, but...... who said that is a bad thing. 200K surely does not sound like a bad thing.

don't often see business plans that involve offline human interaction! interesting and refreshing - I think lots of companies do things similar to this. In the same genre you have companies selling local deals and a big company called groupons.

I have been doing this plan. It works great. Business owners hear "top of google" and are happy to pay.
Question on the 301s... Are they just passing (a portion of the) PR or do we get the keyword strength of the links to the page as well?

I doubt very much that this method still works in the way OP described. Lots has changed since 2008. For one thing google maps although instigated pre 2008 it never dominated local searches like it does now. My guess is the OP has moved onto other things. He hasn't posted since 2008. Either he is busy, dead, bankrupt. Lets hope he is busy

I followed through one of the links on that page to another forum from march of this year. It boiled down to:
- 301 doesn't always pass PR [not sure of when or why, but usually it does]
- 301 doesn't always pass link text. [my guess is that new redirects/domains or redirects where content is dissimilar do not. Seems to be linked to the affiliate redirect marketing some merchants used to do.]
So to bottom line it... I'll use this approach and assume that 301s will pass PR and link text. I'll quickly verify for myself if new domains/redirects will pass this stuff.

very confusing.
For those reading this thread in 2012, it can still work. These business owners are becoming more aware of having an online presence, but most of them are still technologically challenged. They really do need our help, they just don't know it yet. Your job is to tell them, either in person, via e-mail, direct mail, or sky-writing airplane!!! I see too many businesses going under because all they know is Yellow Page ads or newspaper ads. Even Yellow Pages is offering biz websites now and boy do they suck!!!!! Find one online and check it out. TAKE ACTION AND JUST DO IT...
