Adding content to your site is always a good idea. While adding content doesn't guarantee rank; there is a guarantee if you don't.

To a certain point, more content can potentially help with SEO even if it's not being read by users. For example, a one-page web 2.0 blog may seem to be more likely to be spam by search engines when compared to a web 2.0 that has ten blog posts.
However, once a site has some baseline content (about 10 pages or so), putting in low-effort filler content is going to be more of a harm than a benefit. Clutters up your website and can potentially result in wasting https://www.google.com/search?q=link+equity.
So bigger isnt better according to Google? Because someone said before bigger is always better

Bigger is only better if there is a purpose for that additional content.
One of my first sites has roughly 1,000 pages and the others that I made later for that same niche have 50-100. The newer ones rank way better and get more traffic overall. One of the main reasons for that is that the newer sites only include content that serves a specific purpose, whereas the 1k+ page site is held back by lots of bulk low-quality posts.

Since you mentioned about ranking via content, these are steps you can consider:
Just about any content will not help. Effective content is definitely a medium for modern SEO.
1. Keyword and user intent research (Know what your audience want and deliver quality content)
2. Design good content (Simple, relevant, inspiring, thoughtful, practical etc.)
3. Correct Content (spelling, grammar, reliable fact-checked information)
4. Keyword usage (Keywords should be used in a proper way. Simply stuffing will not help)
Google's RankBrain algorithm is robust enough to identify proper patterns out of large chunks of text data.

if you don't have time for backlinking then you can focus on low search volume keywords and write articles based on those keyword. This process going to help you a lot as I have practiced. If you slowly pool them with backlink they will give you good position on search result.

Content is part of the equation, so you need to work on it, but content enough is rarely enough nowadays. So you need to work on the other stuff too.

Definitely not, generally blogging is for creating content for the reader. The content must have value for the readers.
Actually, you have a total strategy to create a successful blog. Successful blog means loved by readers and search engine too.
The strategies should contain the purpose of the content, topics, keyword research, readers friendly content formatting, user-friendly UX & UI, content promotion, etc.

Install a local WordPress. Grab yoast in the download section.
