Main Idea

Being a specialist makes your business easier, more profitable, and scalable compared to being a generalist.

Generalist vs. Specialist: 6 Key Differences

CategorySpecialistGeneralist
Client AcquisitionClear target audience; you know exactly where to find them.Vague target; you're confused about where to find clients.
Income PotentialCan charge much higher rates (e.g., $5K–$100K per project).Struggles to sell even at low prices (e.g., $500–$1K).
SalesEasier, more specific pitch tied to client results.Harder, focused on generic features (e.g., "fast website").
FulfillmentRepeatable, scalable systems (like McDonald’s burgers).Custom work every time = reinvention + freelancer chaos.
ReputationSeen as an expert or go-to authority in your niche.Viewed as "a dime a dozen" and easily replaceable.
IdentityYou see yourself as a confident expert and selector of clients. You see yourself as someone hoping to “get hired.”

Real-Life Example

Frankie mentions he once struggled to sell websites for $500 as a generalist. But once he niched down (e.g., websites for plastic surgeons focused on mommy makeovers), he could charge $5K–$40K+ for the same effort.

Why Specializing Works

  • You reuse systems.

  • You can speak directly to client pain points.

  • You build authority faster.

  • Clients are more willing to pay for perceived expertise.

  • You do less client hand-holding and custom proposals.

Final Advice

  • Pick a niche.

  • Build a repeatable system.

  • Make your offer and messaging specific.

  • It’s not impossible to succeed as a generalist, but the odds are 20:1 in favor of being a specialist.

Yes, that's why the best thing today is to focus on a micro niche. It doesn't matter if you have thousands and thousands of followers; it's more valuable and you can earn much more by being someone important in something very specific.

Yes, sir.

100% agree.

Be the go to guy/gal for your micro niche and be a micro influencer.

Better to be the guy that helps plumbers earning between $100k and $1mil in France to get more deals using SEO, than to just be another generic SEO service provider that does backlinks for anyone.

I have tried 3 things: SEO for a niche where I "know something", general programming and general content writing. SEO made me the most money and I focused literally on one game that I understood. There were 1000 keywords and hundreds of angles for a game with 100m downloads. General programming and content writing were cumbersome. Random projects, low payouts, high requirements, stress because you constantly switch context.
