Later in 2018 ( MAYBE August), WordPress 5.0 will be launched. Here’s what you need to know about the next major update for the popular CMS.

Zuckerberg, Gutenberg, Schlossberg, Steinberg...All those icebergs brings changes

I might not like the gutenberg editor but i love the idea of making an editor that can work across all themes etc so it will all be in the same format. Would be amazing for the community so other devs could focus on plugins/themes and more awesome functionality, while u could easily switch themes etc.

Btw, its august now :D

You can already use Guttenberg if you want.

You can already do this with the existing editor.

If you use shortcodes to create your layout (eg used Divi or a page builder) then Gutenberg won't work. It will just dump everything in a classic editor block.

Converting anything that uses shortcodes into a Gutenberg block is a major undertaking, especially if they have attributes.

I like how Gutenberg is going to be baked into WP as a page builder. I have some sites using Visual Composer and Live Composer and if Gutenberg replaces them then I am all for it. I have nothing against third party plugin page builders but I would rather have a “standard” common builder that can by used across themes.

My only concern with these page builders is they are more focused on presentation of the page and make publishing articles more burdensome. If WP can make it so Gutenberg is more focused on the page templates then publishing pages and posts is a matter of entering text, then this will be fantastic. Some people are not tech yin any way and just want to select a theme and post in some text to publish and don’t care about the features of the editor or what block to use. I am all for separation of concerns when it comes to data layer and presentation layer and do hope WP can succeed with this and Gutenberg. I think this is a step in the right direction and will be an afterthought come WP 6.0.
