Macbook Pro yes/no and why

You could get like 3 or 4 very good laptops for the cost of one MacBook Pro.
If you are a designer or writer it would be perfect for you, otherwise it is just way too much of an investment to carry it around.
For compressing videos it's extremely fast and games play in high quality.
The programs that come pre-installed on the MacBooks are very nice and I think if you can make the money back it would be worth it, otherwise start small and scale as you go so you don't get into debt.

I put Yosemite on my HP probook not long ago, currently using double boot. I mostly did it because of my music production hobby, and I enjoy using Logic for mastering.
As for IM it's more inconvenient than Windows, but nothing detrimental. You probably know most of the IM software is Windows-only.
However if you use a VPS for it, you shouldn't care. And if you do need to run something on your mac you can always use Parallels. Just keep that in mind as an added cost, if cost matters to you.
All in all, it's your decision to make. If you prefer it due to some advantage in video editing, then by all means go for it

If design matters for you, then go with mac. But for video editing and gaming, you'll get more powerful models for the same price. Sony, Toshiba and Asus are as reliable as Apple, but more price friendly.

You won't be able to play games much on MacBook Pro. I have one, I like macs because they are easy to use.
Since you are going to use it for graphics and videos etc. It's the best option you have.

No because... just no. For me PC > Mac
But if you're into video edition / photoshop I can understand.. and you want to pay extra for the fancy design go for it.
I run Photoshop on an Asus core i7 laptop without any problems. Could probably put Adobe Premier too but don't need it.

Mac doesn't offer any benefits when it comes to video editing or photo editing unless the person is used to, or wants to use the mac programs for video editing and/or photo ediitng. What matters the most for photo and video editing is processor,ram amount and disk speed.

A person doesn't need to use a mac to understand that it is overpriced for the specs it provides.

Big NO! Why? Because you're paying way higher price just for the name and not for better specs or quality.
About the software... I'll pay way more and at the end I'll have to pay for VPS to use software? No way!
It's the same thing with iPhone compared to another smartphone in the same price class. You're paying for the name.

yes, yes, yes ... plus there are heaps of great mac-only programs - such as rapidweaver, freeway pro, flux, iWork ... and parallels if you need other stuff.
when you use a mac, you never go back ... I've used macs for over 20 years, and can't tolerate pcs and windows.
As long as you're not going in to debt to buy it, go for it.

I'd say buy the Macbook Pro. I own one myself and it is one of the best investments I have ever made. I bought it in 2011 and till this date I have never had a problem. Considering we're almost 2015, the Macbook Pro has run perfectly for about 4 years, never had a problem and it is still as fast as it was when I first started it.
Your productivity will certainly improve due to the intuitive design and workflow a Macbook Pro has to offer. The cost might be a bit more than a Windows PC, but in the end it will be a lot cheaper. Macbook's tend to last a person 7-8 years before they encounter problems, Windows laptops last for 2-3 years only. You can buy 3 windows laptops for 3x $700 = $2100 in the same time you'd get a Macbook Pro of $1400. In the long run it'll save you money on hardware and software like Microsoft office that you don't have to buy.
