The new MacBook feature that Apple doesn’t want you to have

Touch screens are coming to MacBooks — whether Apple likes it or not.

The Neonode AirBar, a $99 gadget announced this week at CES 2017 in Las Vegas, can convert a MacBook Air’s screen into a touch screen when placed under it.

“It’ll make your MacBook Air work like an iPad,” Neonode exec Remo Behdasht told The Post. “This is something people have been asking for for a long time.”

That’s despite the fact that Apple has stubbornly resisted enabling touch screens on its laptops — a hard-line stance that originated with founder Steve Jobs.

“Touch surfaces don’t want to be vertical,” Jobs declared in 2010 as he unveiled a new MacBook Air. “After an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off. It doesn’t work, it’s ergonomically terrible.”

Neonode is betting that Mac fanatics will shrug off Jobs’ finicky dictum. Holiday sales “went very well” for a wider version of its AirBar made for PCs with 15-inch screens, winning “best seller” status on Walmart.com, according to Behdasht.

The AirBar for the MacBook Air is slated to hit Amazon.com in March.

Later this year, Neonode is planning an AirBar for the newly released MacBook Pro — even though the latest version has a “touch bar” that Apple execs contend is a superior alternative to a touch screen.

With Apple’s touch bar, “you have to look down, then you have to look up,” Behdasht says.

With the AirBar plugged into the MacBook Air’s USB port, on the other hand, “you can actually look at the screen and interact with it,” he says. “We’re trying to emulate the experience you get on an iPad.”

Elsewhere this week, a $69, Kickstarter-funded gadget that makes the MacBook Pro’s aggressively minimalist design compatible with accessories like TV monitors and external hard drives saw its funding cross the $1 million mark.

Even though I hate macs officially, I'll admit unofficially that's a pretty cool gadget for one!

Hopefully you do not hate Mac users as I started transitioning to the dark side in November.

I watched a video on this sort of thing a few weeks ago. It looks good for creative work, but not very accurate for say clicking close tab etc.

Edit, the article seems outdated. I'm pretty sure it's the exact same product as the one in the video, which is already on sale here; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3MHMSF/

Haha, no of course not. I selfishly steer my own clients away from macs just because I don't know much about them. But I'll admit they are very good - much better security, less viruses and they look nicer than PCs.

I did upgrade a MacBook recently to an SSD drive and it took me all day because I'm such a Mac-noob.

I'll be sure not to dial up Scotland if I have any problems then.

It is much nicer than my "old" laptop but I do miss the touch screen aspect which I have on that so this is a cool add on to me.

I moved over to the Mac side about 8 months ago with an iMac and I'm really glad that I made that move. Our house has a collection of iPads, iPhones and iPods and everything works well. I much prefer Macs to Windows now and I've been looking at getting the new Mac Book Pro. I'm not sure that I'm too bothered about the lack of a touch screen but this gadget looks pretty cool and it's nice to have that option.

I may get one just to try it out.

I agree. Macs are beautiful and the software is generally safer (Although viruses are possible hackers just target them less because, well, less users) However the price just ruins all that.

Also, Apple went and made it so that you can't upgrade parts on the new models (Soldered down I think) which is another dick move.

Literally every device I own aside from my laptop and computer is Apple, just because of the premium quality but for running programs and games- Windows kills it

Never understood the point of a touch screen on a notebook. That said, one girl was using it to scroll down pages because scrolling with the touchpad didn't work on her acer (because of the touch screen? that would be ironic)

Haha, yea don't call me about macs :)

I do swear by my iPhone though so I'm a bit of a contradiction in that respect.

Yes, macs less targeted of course because they have much smaller market share. I believe their OS is based on unix though which is inherently more secure than windows.

I had a feeling this was coming, I spotted a pair of bright green trainers in one of his pictures, now the Mac Book. Unfortunately it looks like @BassTrackerBoats is taking the transition into becoming a yuppie. Sad times for BHW, a bad start to 2017.

I have 3 pairs of skinny jeans. Is this wrong for a guy in his mid 40's ? However, I only tend to wear them when I'm heading to the Apple store to talk Macs with those hipster types who Apple seem to employ.

Indeed. According to Web Analytics, macOS + Linux share is around 6%, while Windows is in the 40%.

It is based on BSD. The "*nix is inherently more secure" is just a platitude that makes no real sense in the last 15 to 20 years.

If you were American I'd have a more witty comeback. Canada is so hard to insult, as nobody outside Canada ever thinks of it.

It's just 5 hockey rinks surrounded by bears :D
