current laptop is a notebook and its all I have and have had for quite a while (basically lost everything I owned another story )

anyways--startin to make some money now so I def wanna upgrade..because I can't really even do some things.

I'd like to spend under $2k but willing to spend more and I kno thats a lot but I don't really wanna just get some 'deal' I want to get something that I like--and has all the features that I want.

Pretty sure I want a solid state--and a bigger normal secondary drive also would like as big of a screen as possible. portability isnt really an issue because I could just use my notebook.

    Thinking about getting an 'msi'

    I've seen a few configured w/what I want..and they are around ~$1800..

    Anyone have one?

    Any other recommendations?

    Matte vs Glossy?

Go with Lenova or HP brand.

I like matte laptops a lot better. Also I wouldn't suggest HP, most of the HP laptops I've owned have had overheating problems.

I was thinking of getting one of those laptops that weighed under 3 lbs. eg: Zenbook, or Samsung 9 series.

I would strongly recommend the ASUS Republic of Gamers G74SX-AH71. A very solid laptop for the price (around $1400) I have the cheaper 1000 model at I can run damned near everything with it, that and its pretty cool looking.

You best select a laptop / notebook that meets your budget.

Then decide what size hard drive you require.

How much RAM memory do you need ???

What size screen will best meet your needs ???

If you have a wireless laptop / notebook you will find it more convenient compared to a desktop which restricts your location.

forget what everyone else just said. I've been researching for weeks now and I have the same budget as you. Here is what I arrived at and just ordered. The processor, graphics card, RAM, sound, display, hard drive are all AMAZING. It doesn't come with solid state drives but it comes with something even more special you wont find on normal laptops which is a RAID controller. It ships with 2 7200 RPM drives in RAID0 which is super fast. If you wanted to you could even buy 2 solid states and slap them in RAID 0 giving yourself crazy overkill. not to mention the laptop itself looks slick with part of the casing being metal and the customizable LED backlit keyboard:

Dell XPS 15 is what I have, it's a fully loaded notebook. The 1080P screen mine has is the best on the market, and it has the best laptop speakers on the planet and WAVES audio processing built in. Check it out.

your screen size is only 15 (compared to 17.3), doesnt burn blueray, has a 6 cell battery (compared to 9), only 8 gigs of ram (compared to 12), has a worse graphics card (the 570m performs 20% better), there is no raid controller, no backlit keyboard, and no down firing subwoofer :D the msi has a built in overclocking controller and superior cooling system. also, its not clear if the dell has usb 3.0 or not.

The MSI is good for the price, but they seem compact (no dedicated #pad on the side even) and they don't stay nearly as cool as the Asus, the Asus have a great design.

You can also get it with the 570m instead of the 560m, it's just a bit more expensive and it will easily bump to 16gb RAM. I bought mine and upgraded the RAM myself for ~$200, the only thing now is the SSD.

Highly recommend the G74sx, very highly!

yeah asus is pretty competitive. idk why u think the msi is compact though and there certainly IS a dedicated number pad. People say that with the MSI it gets a little warm but not hot. The only bad thing I read about the MSI was that there was a problem where sometimes pushing a key wouldnt register but they fixed that and its no longer a problem.

There is, I just never noticed it. That's kinda what i mean by compact, it is all "squished" together like a regular laptop where as the G74sx is really spread out. Guess it all boils down to personal preference but I know about the key pressing problem and it just seemed like it was a cheaper build, like they cut a few corners in order to keep price down. The Asus just feels like a better put together machine to me when they are side-by-side.

yeah right. the specs on the macbook pro are garbage and cost like 3 grand. then you wind up with something half as powerful for twice the money. The shitty part is even if you wanted to spend a ton of extra money to pimp out the macbook pro you can't because apple doesn't offer high enough specs to.

lmao noob, you didn't even look up the right notebook. Learn to google first then come back to BHW.

You're wrong because my XPS 15 (L502X) has:

15" display AUO Optronics 1080P display (best laptop display) (17" IS available L702X)
    Core i7 2720 Quad Core
    Skype Certified HD webcam
    9 Cell Battery
    Blu Ray BURNER
Yes, 8 GB Ram (and it's plenty)
    750GB 7200rpm HD
    BACKLIT KEYBOARD
Down Firing Subwoofer (with WAVES Audio - look it up) and JBL speakers
    Nvidia GT540
Amazing touchpad and keyboard, very responsive (no lag issues here)
EXCELLENT cooling system actually - it's on the side and works very well - they did a great on cooling on this notebook
    3 USB Ports (2 of them 3.0)
    Built in TV Tuner Card
    HDMI, display port, etc

I paid $1300 for that configuration, with 2 year accidental warranty. thrown in

Yes the MSI has a better graphics card since um, it's a GAMING laptop. The XPS 15 is arguably the best multimedia notebook on the market, it also works great for many games but if you want bleeding edge then go with Sager etc. Honestly that MSI looks cheap, like all MSI's. The build quality is questionable and that keyboard looks like it'll be a source of further problems in time.

Wow great suggestion FuManCh. That laptop specs are awesome hands down, but I'd rather buy a gaming desktop in my opnion
