Hello. I have been lurking around the forum today reading everything I could find on merchant accounts and haven't really seen any positive reviews on any.

I was wondering if anyone could shine in with some reviews, as I am in the market to set up at least one merchant account with a company. It will have to be able to accept rebills, and no it's not porn but diet based items.

I'm just looking for some reviews/pointers to look out for as these will be my first merchant accounts. I'm not sure who to really avoid or who has a good track record for this kind of thing, and I figured who would know better than the people at BHW? :)

    You could try many methods.

-Local banks often have online gateways you can use (Us bank, etc)

-Paypal will run cards for you

-I use netbilling.com for a few of my products and they are great. They are a gateway and will provide you with multiple banks to setup accounts with.

    Good luck :)

Thanks for the reply. I never knew about local banks to set up as a gateway. Paypal I would prefer to stay away from as they seem to be holding money from a lot of people at BHW and other places. I'll add netbilling to my list as well. Thanks for the reply :)

Diet based products are generally considered nutraceuticals, I am guessing you are using the continuity based model? (free trial then rebill after a few days). Visa/Mastercard have been coming down very hard on these companies, putting pressure on the payment processors to stop accepting them. If you are not using the continuity model I can definitely help you. If you are... I may be able to help, but if anything I could definitely toss you a few pointers and connect you with people who can help. Shoot me a PM!

Local banks usually just refer you to another company for merchat processsing so that the personal banker can make a commision. They claim they are part of the bank when really they are not.

It also depend on type of way you are wanting to take in orders...
Are you going to be using another piece of software like 1shoppingcart, ZEN cart, Infusionsoft? You may need to make sure that your choice is an option with your cart solution.

i personally use a couple different processors, one for each business. I seriously like authorize.net the best. have not had one problem ever, they may however be a little bit more on fees but my piece of mind more than makes up for it.

    all my best

well a lot has happened with merchant accounts/banks in the last 6 months since the ICAL fall out. I would try and stay within the USA, but if you are looking for an international merchant I heard cyprus is pretty much the only country giving out merchants atm. also if you go international you need to setup a corp. in that country, but it would be blingy. I would highly suggest getting 3 merchants and rotating them

As an aggressive and rapidly growing company, we are actively seeking merchants in the high-risk arena. With very close ties to our financial institutions, we have the unique capability to offer lower rates to our clients. Contact us now and...

My suggestion is to stay away from so-called "dedicated merchant account providers", unless you need a high-risk one or you're dealing with xxx, pharmacy, gambling or anything else generally deemed "unacceptable".

Stick to large banks and you're alright. Barclay's (both UK and Seychelles - latter if you want it offshore) offer pretty good rates, as well as terms. You'll find tons of reputable banks in the States as well. Obviously, if your company already has a bank account with a major bank then the first thing you should do would be contacting your own bank (mainly because it's far easier to get accepted if you can show some history).

As for the gateway (and yes - every merchant account needs a gateway in order to accept payments online), I suggest you to either go with Authorize.net (one of the most reputable ones) or ask your bank which gateway they suggest (or if they offer their own one) as typically staying with the gateway your bank recommends is the easiest - mainly integration wise.

You could always use a third party processor until you have enough business coming thru to warrant a merchant account. GS Pay is a good one, they allow replica and other stuff like that so I don't think they would mind what your doing.

GSpay charges you 10%, and to me that is very expensive.
