google ad planner & semrush 30 days trial account (just a VCC would do the job) are enough to start out with keyword research,
the keywords difficulty is never accurate when it comes to these tools (semrush, ahrefs and alternatives, ad planner difficulty is for the PPC) but it can be used to get an initial idea or filter a list of them,
you should check the competing pages/websites manually, especially for the main targetted keywords

Rely on Google related tools as much as you can, since you are looking for free tools. Google KW planner, Auto auto complete & trends are enough to understand the volume and variations of the main KW.
If KW planner requires your card details, then use auto complete feature of Google and trends as well. I think you need to run at least one adwords campaign to use KW planner properly. I'm not so sure about it. Can anybody confirm?

Ahrefs free keyword generator is great.
Ubbersuggest is useful and annoying but you get 3 free searches a day.
I've been playing a bit with wordtracker recently. It isn't as accurate as far as volumes go but it has helped me find a few gem keywords. You get 10 free searches per day.
