I crawl expired domains from Authority website, then filter and choose the best ones that have very strong backlink profiles, that's my approach to get expired domains and use them to rank for tens of my niche sites so far.
Somebody will focus on expired domains that have very high metrics (something like: DA>=30, PA>=35, TF>=20) that I argue about their efficiency in SEO.
So it's up to you to find your own expired domains
