Long tailed keywords SEO question

So I am obviously interested in ranking for long tailed keywords for my site but I can't find any information about whether or not to specify these long keywords specifically. It just looks spammy to me trying to put every variation in my meta descriptions.

Say you were trying to rank:
American Bulldog Puppies for Sale

What would you specify as your keywords?

Just; American Bulldog, Puppies, For Sale

Or go all out;
American Bulldog Puppies for Sale, Bulldog Puppies for Sale, Puppies for Sale, American Bulldog, Puppies, For Sale, etc.

There's this thing called latent semantic indexing. Basically it's a fancy name for the linking of concepts. You say puppy and the search engine knows that a puppy is a small dog. If someone searches for small dog, and the only result was about a puppy, it'd render your result there. Just like matt cutts ranks for payday loans, we all know he's a spammer and he's building a career for when google dumps him.

Kingofgreen,

Gullsin has a good list. You should also keep in mind that its more important to make whatever content you have on the page useful and something that people like. Include your words but don't bend over backwards trying to fit them all in. Make a point to use similar words in your text that aren't necessarily your target keywords.

So would I specify in my meta description all these long tailed keywords or rely on google to link together the concepts? I want google to consider me for these but I have been told too many keywords is bad and to keep it under 3 per page, which is impossible if I want to use all my variations.

That's old school SEO right there.... How do you link a website to semantic meanings?

If you want to rank for longtails you will also want to have information related to your topic.

The easiest way to think about it is Starbucks, when people talk about starbucks it is very rare that they have something like coffee in seattle, or best coffee shop ever in their anchor text etc.

But Starbucks can rank for those because google understands what the people are talking about around a link that would usually just say Starbucks. It can determine that Starbucks = Coffee, even if someone doesn't have Starbucks makes coffee as their anchor.

So for this attempt to rank this is what i would do:
Get the kw you are trying to rank for. Get, or type out, 5 pages of content for them.
Register some 2.0 properties, wordpress, blogspot, tumblr, etc and make them with the long tail you are targeting in there. Because each blog will be about something specific you will be writing about it, and the lsi will understand that even if you are writing about say "american bulldog puppies" it is also about american bulldogs. Sprinkle in some varied anchor text to the other properties and you have a cheap little link wheel.

Longtails are no different than what you know about seo already, it is really just putting in the work.

So for a direct answer to your question, you don't need to put "puppies american bulldogs" and "american bulldog puppies" in your meta or title as google already knows the users intent when they enter those two phrases. Make sure your money pages are setup correctly and do the appropriate off page seo and you will rank for those terms.

Dont keyword stuff your meta tags
use 3 max

its not necessary to put all the exact keywords in the article.
Just make it flow and google will get the point,
