When doing on page SEO for a local keyword (trying to rent it out once it's ranked), what do you do about an address and phone number? Do I just put in random fake information?

Advertise on BHW
Approach a business first and offer them to do it for free so you can use there address! Then rent it too them after it has ranked!!
 
I guess, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of having the listing there in the first place?
 
Yeah I really want to rank it before renting it out. Any other ideas? Or does the address and phone number really matter that much?

Yes they do matter for your citations.

In the US you can rent a location (mailbox actually) from any number of places and your business address would then be 123 Anywhere Street, Suite XYZ, City Name, State, Zip Code. Local phone numbers can be had by Google for free.

This is the best answer.

That being said, there are probably better means to get the results you're looking for. Have you looked at any expiring domains with local addresses on page?

Solid approach. It also depends on if you're trying to get in the 7 pack or are just wanting to rank above it. Steer clear of po boxes though, those don't work well at all in my experience.

Absolutely a good clarification. No PO Box, go to an independent mailbox place like mail boxes etc, UPS Store and such where you would get a physical address listing.
 
If you are offering a local business or service ! i suggest you need to place your original details !! that will help your client to reach u !!!
 
Ofcourse it matters ,if you are looking to do business with them for a long time,i suggest you provide real info and contact details
