Hi Guys,

I'm looking to do some work on my website to improve local SEO and hoping someone can steer me in the right direction.

While it's a relatively large industry, I don't see much competition on google, and it seems one competitor is appearing in the first rankings of google for a bunch of keywords.

So I suppose I have the following initial questions:

should I try and get backlinks from the same domains as this competitor(as well as others)?

should I create content around their same keywords?

is it worthwhile creating pages for suburbs in our local area (eg. domain .com /losangeles/beverlyhills) as I notice they have done the same?

basically, I'm looking to stick it to this particular competitor and beat them at their own game.

If you're looking for an effective/simple local strategy, search for Brian Dean's "Skyscraper Technique" + "Skyscraper Technique 2.0". I use this method to rank local businesses all the time.

Awesome, I'll check that out today.

I am assuming their articles are outsourced, which are posted randomly, ie. 2 articles posted here and there every few months.

To the average person, it would have a lot of content on the site, but for someone with an eye for this kind of thing you can see that the whole site is based around satisfying google for rankings

Yep, this is such a basic yet important step that most agencies with a lot of clients just don't put a lot of effort into. Use the tools for saving time on research so you're focused on writing/formatting those posts. If you have a homerun with a certain piece of content, experiment with promoting it in facebook/instagram ads for a short boost in exposure. This is a cheap way to get real people sharing long enough to generate some lasting buzz.

I would like to add some points

Add Reviews From your clients/friends/family and post frequently about your services on your GMB account . This strategy helped me lot to get discovered locally.
 
Just do one simple thing create relevant links. If you want to stay ahead in Local SEO game, focus on relevance. I mean place you are targeting. If you are looking for more info, just google it.

  4. Do keyword research before you start writing. ...
  5. Use keywords carefully. ...

  7. Write compelling meta descriptions.

This is a great point. There's some sites that will turn your GMB review page into a one-click link you can email to friends, clients etc that will make this process fast/simple enough that most people will do it for you without issue. Setting up auto followup emails for orders and email subscriptions with these links is also a good practice for building your reviews.

I came across a wordpress plugin called magicpage plugin. basically it creates pages for different suburbs automatically within a certain radius. This would save me a ton of time

it's quite expensive though ($30/m), is there any other alternatives that anyone can recommend?

I haven't tried this method personally, but when I was AB testing a site recently it hit me that Google Optimize (optimize.google.com) could also be utilized to show different variations of your landing page for local SEO purposes.
