Local Pages Problem

I know what you're referring to but I'll say that I do this and I haven't seen any negative affects from it. Directories like Angie's List do this all day, I can't see why it would be bad.

What is the best way to rank a local brick and mortar for multiple city keywords? The way I see it there are 3 options:
1. Try to rank the home page for all the keywords (this seems tough for sites where you are targeting 10+ cities)
2. Try to rank a separate page for each city (mywebsite.com/city1). These are considered doorway pages though, with thin/duplicated content. Benefit is they can bum off the domain authority of your main domain.
3. Try to rank a separate domain for each city. The drawback here is that you can only be listed in Google places for 1 website (your main website/keyword), the others would just be spin-offs with less power, making them harder to rank and stay there.
Any insight on which method works the best for long term results?

i'm actually in the process of ranking my first two general local landers [city] + [job]. Do you rent your local landing pages or do you sell leads? how many pages per domain do you build or do you put all the information in a one-pager? actually i have the local landing page with testimonials, general texts, etc., a second site i linked in my footer "history of [job description] and a few citations
