Linking to the domain or the article?

Heyas, I am just after some clarification of where you guys recommend pointing your links to when trying to promote a website with pages targetted at different long tail keywords.

I have completed a decent backlink network based around the diagram tutorial and link wheel articles posted elsewhere on this site which inter-linked articles/hub pages/web 2.0 properties and pointed back to the relative parts of the main site. I have also completed the social bookmarking of these satellite sites.

The next step I am completing is finding relavent forums and viable blogs to make comments and signatures.

Should these comments and signatures link back to the homepage of the main site or do I continue to link to specific articles and just spread it around evenly? I guess what I am trying to find out is: does backlinking to the main page help the SERP of pages that are just targetted at a set longtail keyword (all pages are of the same subject matter).

Each page should have links pointing to it based on the primary keyword of the page.

In organic seo world people link to articles they like directly. You should do the same unless you want your index page to rank for some keywords as well. If not sure, do a bit of both.

Yeap, target one or two keywords per page. I prefer to just target 1. Then build links to all of these pages. Make sure you vary your anchor text a bit as well. The idea is making it look natural. You do not want to use one anchor text pointing to just your main page. I actually do about 25 percent backlinks for the main page and the rest split up evenly for the rest of the pages. This has worked well for me.

First,you have to search and choose the keyword for your site.With the forums and blogs,yes,it is effective as long as the content of you post is good and index by google.

You want it to look as natural as possible to a search engine, so spreading the links around to your index page and internal pages is the best idea. I like xetestem's 25/75 split - good advice. Make sure each time that you change the anchor text to include the keyword/s on the page you are linking back to though. If 100 people wrote links to your site, they wouldn't all use the same text and link to the same page. You want to mimic the crowd (or at least create the impression of a crowd).
