Linkbuilding: How do I start?

majestic is another good spy tool for discovering where your compeitors backlinks are coming from and which anchor texts they are using

semrush will also tell you who your main competitors are and give you an idea of how much traffic they are getting, as well as giving you an indication of similar / related keywords you should/could be targeting

FINALLY, go into your analytics and download the complete list of keywords that people found your site with and use them as additional anchor texts when placing your links to give you a much wider anchor text diversity

and of course, make sure that you have a high ratio of generic anchor texts:

-website
-more info
-site
-info
-supplier
-provider
-etc
-etc

I would suggest, you buy an emd, something related to what your company is about. and do all the experimentation on it.
Do the persona hacking.
Make web 2.0's
Social profiles.. etc etc etc

And see how it goes, if it works out for you then do the same on the companys website. but for now hire someone and in the mean time you learn ;)

If you're going to be a link builder, the first thing that you need to focus on is do not build link.

I know that sounds crazy but this is 2016.

The SEO game has dramatically changed.

You could have gotten away with simply buying software and manually building links as recently as two years ago, but if you want consistent results that will produce search traffic for many years to come, you need to do things manually and you need to earn links.

The good news is you can earn links by focusing on better content and better outreach.

I'm sorry, but this is a load of complete rubbish.

If you want to go down the high quality content with link outreach approach that's fine, and it works.

However, saying software and link building doesn't work in 2016 is so far from the truth it's just crazy.

Google does not know the difference between PBN links, guest post links and completely "natural" links.

It doesn't even know the difference between a natural link and the dozens of spam blogs you just created with rankerx.

All it knows is the strength of the domains, the strength of the pages and what keywords the content is related to.

If Google was so smart they wouldn't need to try to identify spam through high exact anchor text. They would just know your links are spam.

I think you underestimate a lot of things here- yes google knows the difference between niche relevant high quality domains vs. shitty rankerx web 2's you blast out. Account age matters, content matters. You grossly undersimplified things here.
