Link Building for newbs

I have posted a couple of newbie friendly threads so I guess I will consolidate and allow others to chime in to help. My focus is on ecommerce so my take will be a bit different from most on the board I assume but please by all means chip in.

So far I have suggested-
Coupon sites- many have high PR domains, many accept without registering or even providing an email. I have only had a couple show up as links for now but time will tell.

Asking your vendor to be listed on their website- Some maufuacturers have "find a retailer" pages or something similar, yesterday I submitted to about 5 have not heard back. We will see what happens. Again, some high PR domains AND pages.

Google alerts- I see someone already posted that but I did not see it before I made my post. But anyway you can filter it down to discussion level which will show forum posts about the topic you pick. Google is already telling you this is relevant to them so visiting that forum signing up and dropping a link in your sig or on the actual post is not out of the question. Next time google crawls the forum it sees your related link in a relevant forum discussing a relevant topic. A good quality link IMO.

Review sites- One I have not seen recently but there are some high rank review sites, like trust pass for example, that allow posters to add a review. You as the retailer can create and account and your link will be on the site. Hopefully you get good reviews, this also shows related content. So if you sell dog collars and someone looks up a review from your competition, if you are highly rated you often show up on the sidebar when they are looking at the review.
Wish this could be automated!

Social- I have noticed for my new sites that the links I post on FB or Twitter generally get indexed by google faster. So if I post a link to a product on my fan page and then a day or 2 later I google my site name, that is one of the 1st links that shows up. While I have submitted my site to google and webmaster tools I am finding that items on FB and Twitter actually rank a bit higher than my actual domain right now. I am not sure how this helps in ranking but it leads me to believe if we can get many friends to share a link or retweet then it can lead to higher rankings. That is just my assumption though.

So far these are "natural", well not really but they appear natural as they are all in context and for the G man, it is a good thing. I dont know yet about link wheels, link pushing and other tactics that are being used but I am willing to listen to ideas that are safe and steady.

Oh I did want to ask a few questions and hear some thoughts_ Article directories, Good or Bad? I keep reading that duplicate content is bad, and even spun content can hurt but many news orgs submit the same stories but perhaps with a little twist yet they rank highly. How is that the case when the articles are about the same things and many words are the same or similar in the article.

Back to my question, if I create a unique article and submit it to a directory, will that do more damage than good? If so, why? My article is the unqiue one, everyone else is using the dupe content, just like when 1000 websites copy/paste and article from CNN.

creating an unique article and submitting it to a directory is probably the best/most time consuming way to get links. You can't do any harm with article marketing. You will also want to check the thread for UC link pushing.

I will sugest you to submit a uniqe article in mximum 5 article directories. Like that you can cover 200+ article directories and need to use many different articles. This kind of work will provide you good results.

Please note that don't forget to mention a link of your website through target keywords.

Spun articles can provide you good results but this is not effective for long terms. I think Panda updates supports to use uniqe content for link building and article posting work.

If I decide to spin how much spinning should I do. For example I found a short article (probably about 200 words) that I am spinning right now, I also am going to add about 200 more words to the article, will this pass the "G" test?

And part B, do any of these article submission sites allow for spintax? Or should I even worry about that if my article is unique?

**Just an update** I went ahead and posted an article to my own blog and then I spun it and sent that to an article directory. I have to get ready for my brick and mortar job so I wanted to get something done today.

It was a respin of a spin if that makes sense. As I mentioned in my prior post I found an article about 200 words, i spun the content and then added about another 150+ words to it and that is what is on my own blog. I then spun THAT and submitted it to the directory with one link back to my blog and one link back to my money (ecommerce) site.

Ecommerce is my niche too. I run several B2B niche sites that sell products. We do all of the sales over the phone and email. Lots of work, but it's been rewarding.

I've found that froogle / google products CAN be a good source of traffic. I am also looking at some second tier PPC networks. Adwords has been pathetic for us, even after spending $100k in the last few years. We're not going back... always looking for new options.

WOW! You guys are doing great, sadly I am a small fish and work a PT job just to pay the bills until hopefully my site takes off. Congrats on your success!

We had HUGE success with froogle / google products for several years. I'm talking $40k - $70k months - all year long. That all came to a screeching halt about 2 years ago when google decided to screw all who relied on froogle. We get literally ZERO business from it now.

That's kinda why I am here.

Lets say, that I want to link in website with somekind of PR. In what details I should pay attention? Link amount to that site? Can you say something more.

Lets see if we can add more quality outside of the box suggestions to this thread!

I am new to link-building and looking for this discussion and more information.
