Let's quit Smoking

Let me just start off by saying my grandfather died because he didn't have square..... By that I mean he was smoking ever since my mother was a child [born in 62]. he passed away a couple year ago. He has so health issues..Obviously but whenever i went to visit him he had a square in his hand. My aunt always told me that the day he doesn't have a cigerette is the day he will die. As harsh as that sounds... it is so true. He died that morning.

My advice to you is start chewing sunflower seeds. Spit out the shells if you think your boss enough. That will help you even more. Most people that quit smoking i hear them talking about the hobbies they started up.

Hope this helped.

You know I notice now that cigarettes make me MORE anxious every time I smoke. I don't even smoke trashy ones either, proud Spirit smoker here. I think I might have some sort of allergies to the smoke or something.

I love smoking so much but am working on quitting.

I smoked for like 2 years and the thing that helped me the most was letting all of my friends and family know. They helped stop me when I started getting jittery. It really helped when I was drinking because that was the hardest time to not smoke. Just take it one day at a time and make sure you have a mantra to get you through... If you can ride out the craving for 5 minutes I noticed it normally went away.

It's so hard to quit, not the smoking part but filling your time with something :D

Im considering quitting and using one of those vapes, how safe they are though i dunno. I know many people who have successfully quit smoking by using vapes, but they all seem to be addicted to vaping now lol.

Yeah vaping is cheaper though. And hopefully safer time will tell lol.

true that , start smoking again from 2 weeks now

I really hate cigarettes, because whenever I see one, I burn it!

I have recently quit smoking cigarettes. It started out as mandatory, aka I got surgery in my mouth and couldn't smoke for a week. After the week I just thought, "why not keep it going?" It has now been about a month and a week since I've smoked a cigarette.

quitting smoking is harder than quitting meth. i should know, i've done both LOL

E-cig worked for me.

If you have again started smoking after quitting, try e-cig.
Buy an eGo C Twist battery ( buy 2 actually) and since you smoke around 2 packs a day, buy an e-liquid with nicotine strength of 24 mg/ml.
Buy 2 or 3 clearomizers (Innokin i16 double coil works well and its cheap)

Start with 2-4 different flavors - menthol, apple, tobacco and some others.

Once you find an e-liquid that suits you, you will find it difficult to go back to smoking analogs.

@imserious agreed. I remember seeing this thread at the time. Not sure why I didn't chime in.

Here's my mod http://www.whichecigarette.com/reviews/innokin-itaste-mvp-3-0/
and I get this liquid in 18mg http://tucsonvapeescape.com/store/?product=island-breeze-2
^ Not saying that's where I buy from. First thing I found in Google. I'd look for better deals.

I've smoked a few times when I ran out of liquid or when I was drunk at a party or something. Nothing that I really count. Other than that I will have been 2 years without relying on a cigarette come December. Believe the hype, vaping works.

if you want to really stop,go to hospitals and see the people who smoke:lung cancer, blood cancer, death

I tried so many times but I feel sick if I quite. I start smoking again then my body works fine. I can't quite at the stage. Shit man.

Hi all,

Next Tuesday (7th July) will mark 2 years since I last smoked a cigarette. I started smoking casually at school in about 2002, which then escalated to smoking an entire pack if I went out at the weekends, and then to the point where I was smoking at least 10 - but normally about 20 - every day and then up to 40 a day at the weekends. I tried a few different ways to quit including going "cold turkey", cutting down, nicotine gum and then in 2013 I tried the e-cigarette. None of these were particularly successful in that I never stopped smoking for more than a couple of weeks.

On 7th July 2013 after a great holiday in Cyprus I returned to the UK and after the flight I was "clucking" for a cigarette. As I left the airport I lit up, and while I was smoking I decided that this cigarette was going to be the last one I ever smoked.

From then on I took it day by day (or sometimes hour by hour), to make sure that I didn't have another one. I am by no means a qualified expert in smoking cessation, but I do think that after giving up for 2 years I can hopefully offer some sound advice. Here are some tips that helped me:
1. One of the first things I did was read a book called "Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking". This is not guaranteed to make you quit, but give it a chance and read it and it may well help. If you have to, read it again. Something I found particularly helpful in this book was the way that the author compared the nicotine habit to a monster living inside you. (I know it sounds silly). Basically he says that every time you have nicotine, you feed the monster and it gets bigger. If you starve the monster it gets smaller every day. This leads me on to my second bit of advice?

2. Go "cold turkey". This means don't try any form of nicotine replacement therapy at all. Just stop putting nicotine into your body. It is not easy at all, but it's the most effective way of giving up. Replacing smoking with nicotine gum is just another way of feeding the monster.

3. Don't think long term - it will put you off. Take each day as it comes and focus your entire effort on getting through TODAY without smoking. If you find yourself in a stressful situation, then concentrate on just getting yourself through that situation without smoking. Cravings for nicotine can be very frequent, but they don't actually last very long - only a couple of minutes. Drinking a glass of water will help you forget about the craving for a little while, and apparently it's good for you.

4. Don't give yourself too many goals. A lot of people decide when they stop smoking that they are going to stop drinking, eat healthy or go to the gym in order to embrace a healthy new lifestyle. Doing this is only going to make life more difficult for yourself. If you find that eating junk is the best way to reward yourself for not smoking, then do it. You can always lose weight next year.

5. Don't hide away or avoid cigarettes. A lot of the stop smoking advice tells you to throw all of your cigarettes and smoking paraphernalia away, and to avoid situations where you would usually smoke (such as bars, friend's houses etc). I did the opposite. I carried on going to the pub, and there were always cigarettes in the house because my girlfriend still smoked. The truth is that the world is not going to stop smoking just because you are, so you need to develop the willpower to prevent yourself from being influenced by other people and situations.

I hope this advice helps someone. As I say I'm not qualified at all, but the above helped me a lot. Sometimes I think about smoking, but I don't think I really crave it any more. It's taken a lot of hard work to get to where I am, and just like with everything on BHW you have to really put the effort in to reap the rewards. And we all know what the rewards of giving up smoking are.

I was a smoker for upwards of 35 years.
In 2012 I switched to vaping.

The first couple of weeks I would grab the occasional half a smoke until I found my "flavor profile" in e cig juices. That's a big challenge to start.. some folks just prefer the tobacco flavors but there are fruits, candies, beverage, bakery.. and some really unique flavors (do not let anyone talk you into the crab flavor juice - egad!)

I thought I would be a all menthol, all the time flavor vaper but it turns out, I prefer the bakery and some of the coffee flavors.
I do vape like a dragon.. using mostly 12 mg nicotine juices.. I have some no nic juices too for when I've had enough nic but just want a flavor to make big billowy clouds.

I chose my gear by the "pretty" factor and as it turns out I ended up with a cigar size, rainbow colored e-cig with replaceable parts for the juice tanks. It's not nearly as expensive as cigs and I no longer have that raspy voice and smokers hack - and I smell so much better.

there's a huge e-cig forum that has all the info and community support you'd ever want. Just hunt for e cigarette forum..

Hey OP! Former smoker of 8 years here, what I used was an e-cig. Don't use that nicotine gum, it's expensive, and when I worked at CVS when I was a teenager I can't tell you how many people said the gum was more addictive than cigarettes. I picked up a decent e-cig DON'T BUY THE GAS STATION DISPOSABLES! A. The battery in them dies too quick which is frustration and B. They taste like batteries. I picked up a good liquid too, and that is what makes the difference. The best part is I got the liquid without nicotine in it. You still have the sensation of blowing smoke and doing something with your hands. Good luck! You can do it!

I quit with the help of nicotine gums. I used to chew them all the time and much longer than it was recommended and I remember that my jaw hurt from all the chewing. However, it did the job perfectly and for the past 10 years, I've only smoked cigars in 2 or 3 occasions. Oh, yeah, and once you quite, you are going to get fat or at least fatter, so watch out.
