I love offline marketing and like trying new things. I think I have come up with a very good way to get high open rates and I am going to test this with a small 500 piece mail drop.
I just ordered everything I will need for this drop:
*500 color copies of the mailing piece - $56.55 (that is only 9 cents a pop plus shipping - just found this company and no other local company can even come close so it is worth it to order a week ahead)
*500 stamps - $230.00 (I am a firm believer that stamps pull a better open rate over metered postage even though it is cheaper)
*"Confidential" Stamp - $11.46 (I always stamp something on the envelope to grab their attention)
*500 Envelopes - $27.84 (there are cheaper, but these are self seal - I would pay ten times to avoid not licking envelopes lol)
*Pens - $2.79 (We hand write all letters to the business - higher open rate)
*500 Pieces of my "insert" - $25.18 (this will make the letter a bit bulky and it hits home with SEO - this is the part that will get the phone to ring)
*500 blank index cards - $3.49 (the bulky mail piece will be secured to this)
*Scotch Tape - $3 (to secure the bulky piece to the index card)
*500 Return Labels - $56.51 (I have found that traditional "business stationary" gets ignored, but shiny (chrome) return address labels pull much better)
Now, I got the stamps, stamp, envelopes, pens, index cards, and tape at the office supply store. Everything else will be arriving over the next 3-7 days (mailer copies, return labels, bulky pieces). While waiting we will address the envelopes to the 500 companies - we pull the data on the specific industry we will target then I have the neighbor kids hand address them all. They are high school kids and it is easy extra $$$ for them.
This is a brand new "industry" that we are targeting - and a new mailer - all in total the cost is $416.82 (plus the cost to have them addressed) so it comes in just under $1 per.
I will update this as soon as we have them all put together and ready to send.
NOTE: We are using a separate 800 number for this so we can know exactly how many phone calls come from this and track everything. The mail piece is very aggressive and encourages them to "pick up the phone" and call - we aren't looking for website traffic - we want the phone to ring.
