Lets discuss flyer making :)

I'm looking for ideas myself, but here is what I've discovered so far. Enjoy :)

    DESIGN:
A black background with big white letters gets more attention.

Use tabs at the bottom, make sure you include the subject of what they tore off, and any contact info.

The most important element of a flyer is AUTHENTICITY! Promote it with a testimonial, credibility, make it look not like an advertisement, etc.

Simple designs stand out. Some of the best are just a simple tagline, a big picture of an iPhone in the middle, and call to action.

If you live in a place where neon flyers are EVERYWHERE... DONT USE NEON COLORS. Use pastel to give your flyer more authenticity.

Be sure to include an element of exclusivity to intrigue them further.

The general idea is catchline -> MAYBE an interesting picture (only if you can do color or a big ass money sign) -> call to action (website name).

Website MUST be a simple name. No numbers in domain!!! Prefer if the words rhyme (although this takes away from authenticity).

    DISTRIBUTION:

If you're gonna tape flyers to cars and doors, tape them the opposite way (so it looks like a blank piece of paper). The people will be intrigued and will then turn it over and read everything.

NEVER JUST PASS OUT FLYERS TO A BUNCH OF PEOPLE WALKING AROUND!!!
ITS A WASTE. For flyers to be effective you must TARGET. Whether that be a mall, a bunch of people in a park, forest, video game conference, etc. NEVER just pass them out to people walking around the street.

Save yourself walking time, spread out flyers in parking lots where you know people are gonna come back and be like "piece of paper facing away on windshield?! Must read!"

Bathrooms are a great place to advertise b/c you have someones undivided attention for a couple minutes.

Like I said, TARGET your offer to where the demographic hangs out. Don't sell a fishing rod to a bunch of people playing xbox at an event, to go bass pro shop parking lot.

I'm still looking for more, if you guys wanna share what you've found. Don't worry about this niche getting filled... offline is way different that online. :)

Love the tips! Have you tried them, any results?

Also what would be the best place to drop out flyers when you're targeting businesses?

well, from what i've seen in real life,
try not to make them too professional looking. a lot of flyers i see out and about are simple typed messages....i think it makes the flyer seem more believable

This is actually a really good primer on how to do a flyer ad. I do flyer marketing extensively and you've hit the nail on the head in my humble opinion. Nice post OP.

Another good method to drum up business is the small free classified papers. I used to use them occasionally to add a few clients at a time and before long I had more work than I could handle on my own.

I have to give the credit for that to a guy I knew who began a landscaping business and made a ton of money from it. He got the jobs as well as cheap employees all from those small papers. He never had to do any of the work himself after the first year.

    The business parking lot :)

Or if youre targeting a small one you can find what the store is competing against (usually there is a big ass supermart for every niche) and target that parking lot. Like if I sell fishing bait, and im a small store, ill just go to bass pro shop and put out flyers around that say my price for the fishing bait, the % you save, and the quality difference (its better, cheaper, exclusive!, then some sort of urgency element like only 1 week left or limited supply).

I think you misunderstood me. I was talking about when the clients are the businesses, for example flyers that provide a web design/seo service. Targeted toward businesses, not the customers of the business.

I find it difficult to agree that having a black background would give a sense of trustworthiness and/or credibility. Usually a black background suggests darkness, mystery, and covertness.

Depends what you're targeting. Sometimes it just looks nice (not the whole paper is black, just the box around one word you want to stand out, like MCAT.

Where do you get your flyers printed?

Costs can be exorbitant if you get your color flyers double-sided.

The black background with white letters make sense. I understand why some would say black is synonymous with darkness but how often do you see black in the professional world? People wear black suits, with black shoes and carry a black briefcase. As long as the printed flyer is a jet black the white will really stand out. I am sure you will make a professional impression.

Exactly. People aren't going to see a black background and think of harry potter

And PoolShark I still don't get your link... its telling me about an AIM robot.

Ummmm.... it's not my link. I simply gave the correction in the file extension. If you try to download it the way it was originally, it doesn't work.

The file is .pdf and not .pfd

That's all I did... you'll have to ask the OP your questions as I didn't design this flyer

For what it's worth - I didn't quite get the flyer either :)
