Actually it is quite easy: People who are asking upfront for discount do not see/feel the value what is offered. So they want a discount. But then again, even if they get a coupon they do not see or feel the value what is offered so they do not buy the service/product. They're afraid to spend money on self improvement. They see the investment (money) as a loss/cost and not what the information provided can bring them. They buy other useless things instead.
These are the 'weak' in the game which also will almost never experience real success.

And when you make it away and don't go buying fancy things. They do not add real value to your life and take away from you being a person who does not really have to work.

I think my definition of low self-esteem might be different than yours, because I think the two are somewhat unrelated. I view having a low self-esteem as being eager to improve yourself and not thinking too highly of yourself, but you can still have confidence and strength with this mindset.
