4 links is nothing, maybe the competition just has more and thats why they rank better and pushed your site down.

Not directly, but probably more people start buying ads(google goal) so your cpc increase and your roi decrease.

Hi, yes links were indexed and showing in Ahrefs. One thing I thought of is I edited a blog post the day before it was slapped to page 2 on Google. All I done was add internal links.

Do a research on the linked sites backlinks, there will be some issue. Or play around with it, take down those links and see how that affects.

Internal links do affect rankings but ensure you don't overoptimize the internal link anchors, that can create trouble.
