Laptop stolen! Help me track down this f*cker.

My apartment was burglarized and my laptop stolen this weekend along with a TON of other possessions. I had http://www.logmein.com installed on it, so that offers a glimmer of hope for recovering my things I'm thinking. I've been monitoring the laptop, and the next time it comes online I'll then have the thief's IP address.

But this may not be enough to catch this guy. I might need to collect more information, such as his email, name, etc. I could theoretically remotely watch him use the computer, and wait for him to fill out a form or check his email or something, but that could take a while, and also Logmein would notify him that he's being watched! So that would give me away, and that's not a preference I can turn off. So I'm thinking that wouldn't work so well.

It would be preferable to just transfer and execute a script on his computer that logs his keystrokes as well as IP address and maybe any other relevant info, and would then email this info back to me. Is there a program anyone can recommend to do this? Or any other advice someone can offer in this situation. I really want my computer back!!!

if someone steals it, 99% chance he/she will sell it, not use it for himself/herself.

i would have to agree with soulchief.
Time is of the essence tho.
check ebay daily and newspapers classifieds etc, etc.
Register the laptop at stolen911.com or trace.com and other such websites.
The fact that he prob try and sell it on will keep the trail warm.

Funny story:
Near where I live this guys horsebox trailer got stolen and the dumb cunt of a thief advertised it in on an online sales website and eventually got nicked for it!!

I feel sorry for you. If my laptop was stolen... well, just not go there =P
 
My laptop was also stolen a couple of weeks ago. Really sucks when it is your livelihood man I feel for ya.

Buying a good of a crime is still a crime.
 
Man that sucks. I hope that you will get a way to maybe get the laptop back. i hope the moron will turn the laptop on and you can see his ip address..
 
just keep an eye on the net as someone above said...
informing friends and neighbours may help.... even try asking the local shops you may never know what an ass like that can do.... if he is a noob he will probably ask people about it...

Man, I feel sorry for you. Hope you get your stuff back somehow.

When watching pawn shops / ebay / classifieds looks out for some of your other stuff as well. Hope something shows up.
 
If u can then buy a keylogger send it to him u will recieve all information without his knowing
 
Usually when laptops are stolen they immediately format it and reinstall a copy version of Windows for fresh use. Sometimes the thief might just be curious to what files you have on your computer and go snooping around ---- that could be your only chance of recovering the laptop. Contact your local law enforcement department and notify them of this. Best is if you even give access to them on that script, so ones it pops, they can go to the judge and get a warrant for the IP addy from the ISP and that'll be your gateway back to reuniting with your laptop.

Good luck though....And yeh it must blow more than just donkey balls to lose such an item with such valuable info on it :(
 
Print 10 $100 dollar bills on your laser printer and put a no questions asked $1000 reward classified... (hey you never know..)
 
Thanks for your responses and sympathy everyone. That helps, as does reading about some other nightmarish burglary stories in which people lost SO much more than I did. Everything I lost is pretty replaceable, and that's the important thing. I even did an online backup fairly recently. Still, I'd like to get it back and see him punished.

Yeah, I've called around to local pawnshops, and am also checking craigslist and local ebay listings. And yes, I've definitely filed a police report (and they even took fingerprints!)

Any keyloggers any one would recommend? honest.dealerx? I was also looking at computrace if anyone has any experience with that.
 
Are there any keyloggers that *aren't* detected by AVG? I've been playing around with a few and AVG seems to detect and trip them all up, or at least notify the user of their presence. This would pose a problem to discreetly installing and running the key logger on my stolen laptop. I know I could uninstall AVG on it first, but I'm just trying to minimize the steps I'll have to take in the limited amount of time I might have with access to the computer -- I figure the more portaling in I do, the more likely he is to notice my actions.
 
Ardamax keylogger and Real Spy Monitor as well can do the work .but it would be detected by AV .

they still it, sell to a local computer store for really cheap , they format it and re-sell

i have seen it
