Hello BHW,

I am posting this because many of the members on BHW have websites that rely on advertising revenue to earn money online.

As IMs we are really at the forefront of the battle against services like adblock.

Why?
If services like adblock continue to grow the web will die! Almost 100% of online information is supported by advertising revenue, and with programs like adblock becoming more popular, websites revenue's are just going to decrease until they can no longer be supported, and will eventually die.

What can we do?
As IMs we really need to start to work together to face this problem head on, and start to create tools that allow us to stop programs like adblock from running on our websites.

I am hoping that this thread can become a discussion on how we can stop adblock in its tracks.

Ideas I Have:
Here are some ideas that I have been debating over using:
  • A piece of code to check for adblock, if it is enabled, website will not load - why give info to people who are not supporting you?
  • Banners on the website warning against the use of adblock and the death of the internet

The only way to make money is by working together! Programs like adblock are killing the web without drawing attention. It is time for us to battle back and save the free internet!

There are a few codes out there, but I am wondering what the best approach to this is.

I am also not sure how the google bot works with these codes.

If I knew it would not make a difference to my ranking, I would redirect all traffic that uses adblock to an uncloseable page that has a "stop using adblock" logo on it...

But i am afraid that by using that, google will see it and devalue the website
 
I found a site called "dSero adbooster" that goes after the adblokers and if it detects them changes the images. I am going to give them a try,see if they work.
 
The problem isn't really adsense as much as video ads on YouTube. Adsense doesn't really bother people as much as waiting 30 seconds to watch a 2-5 min video, especially when the ads get repetitive, this is why I started using adblock anyways. You can thank Google for that.

Getting rid of software like Adblock is like telling users they have no right to privacy.

If your business model relies on something that is an annoyance, or it will fail, it's time to get back to square one and rethink your plan.

Just for the record, signature banners and links are not blocked by AdBlock. So that works. A genuine online store isn't blocked by AdBlock. That works too.

Do you not use AdBlock yourself? Or NoScript? Or Ghostery? Or a Privacy Browser Mode? Or CCleaner? You don't remove Flash cookies and supercookies? You allow Java complete access?

OP, we can get rid of AdBlock once you make yourself open for us to track you. This is a fair trade according to your stance.

P.S. A user using AdBlock probably wouldn't click your link, fill in your form, or do whatever AdBlock was blocking in the first place. Adblock users are not the target market for black hat, and understandably so.
 
Here is the way I see it.

If you have a website that relies on money form ads (such as an info sharing website) why would you show your content to people that have a 0% chance of clicking an ad?

If a user does not have adblock on they may have a 0.0001% chance, but never the less, by not having it enabled they give your website a chance. If 100% of users had adblock, most info sites would need to be shut down.

Privacy Browser Mode, CCleaner and removing Flash cookies and supercookies wont kill the ads on websites. They will protect your privacy, but they do not hide ads, and still allow websites to profit from your visits.

Having ads show, and protecting your privacy are two different things.

With the stance you take, you are arguing that all people should use it, in which case every info site out there would loose their ad revenue, and even websites like google, yahoo, etc would crash.

Even this forum largely relies on the ads it has. Without them this forum could not and would not exist.
 
I am a AdBlock super user :)
I was fed up with ads on YouTube.

Youtube, even though it has really digressed over the last year or so, is a HUGE and fundamental part of current society. Without generating money from the views it receives it could not exist. (or youtube would have to charge per view)

I much rather take a 30 second ad that is skippable at 5 seconds before a video and support the video maker rather then the alternative where you would need to pay a fee to use youtube, or even a fee for every video watched.

Nothing comes free, without the money from ads, most things would not be possible.

Adblock is not killing the web. Advertisers are.

Adsense and other ads that have little impact on the functionality and design of the site are fine, no problem. Infact, adblock is installed with non-intrusive ads allowed! However, adblock was initially created when advertisers had popups, popunders, mouse movers, constantly moving popups, video, audio and other malicious means. That's what people don't like and why adblock is installed. They also install it so they dont have to watch 5 minutes of ads for a 2 minute video.


If you have information that you think is worth money and want to make people pay for it then set it up as a membership site. If people don't subscribe, obviously your information isn't worth being paid for or you overpriced your knowledge.
 
Those who are using adblock very well know that there are ads on a site and they are not potential profitable visitors anyways. So even if there was no adblock they would never click on an ad/fill out an offer. So saying adblock is killing the revenue is wrong.
 
Nobody wants to view ads, even sometimes they click on it. Adblock makes page loading faster, and everyone will eventually start using adblock to get rid of any ads. Adblock users are increasing everyday. PPC will die because of adblock.

I can't agree with the fact that people using adblock will never click an ad. The whole idea of PPC like adsense is presenting content related ads so people gets interested and click on it. Now for adblocks, if people can't see it, there is zero chance of them being interested. My whole point is, even if I don't like ads, I can still be interested about an ad and click on it. Nobody likes ads, but they still click on it. Adblock reduces that chance to zero.
 
A good CSS overlay with a images of your ads will basically defeat each and every adblock addon. You can get creative and show some sort of locked squeeze page if you can't display the ads properly. You can conditionally fire your lightbox when you detect adblock is in use, just scrape the code off the web or copy-paste from one of the big CL networks... Possibilities are endless, really.
 
I got adblock detection script from Mg-cash running on my website where user need's to pause his adblock if he want to view the website. Problem was google robots did not penetreate the website and i was automatically deindex by google so i need to remove the script because of stupid google. And now everything is alright again.
 
i am a adblock super user and also a site owner .

if you have 100 visitors [ only 40 will have adblock ] .

but i not use adblock for good sites . my site have banners , so tension of adblock .

best way to protect your self is to use cpa [ use a image with link ]
 
Ad block is for pussies only who are afraid a few ads on a website. Obviously when there are a shitload of pop-up ads, that is annoying, but i think it's better to just block pop-ups not all ads. Personally for me there can be a lot of ads on a website and that doesn't bother me at all as long as these are not pop-ups.

And who mentioned youtube, yes that is annoying sometimes, because mostly when i see that there is ads, i have to wait that stupid 10 seconds to turn it off or i have to click on video to skip that seconds so i could turn that ad off after it pops-up. It's annoying as fuck if you watch lots of videos. Youtube should remove that shit, i think normal ads by video are fine, but when they put that shit straight to a video, that is bullshit. Especially most of the invalid clicks can be get by this crap in ads on videos, because i clicked a few times just by accident on ad it self, not on that "x" button to turn it off and it's very easy sometimes to click on ad by mistake, since it gets annoying and you want to turn it off fast. And by adsense terms it's bad to get invalid clicks, but they put that shit in videos where the biggest chance to get invalid clicks is by ads on videos...Kind of stupid from them...

I think people who are using AdBlock wouldn't even click any advertisements regardless if they have AdBlock installed or not.
