Kicking your ass with data.

@validseo out of interest, have you done a correlation for sites with keywords meta tag in bing?

My tools only measure Google so unfortunately I have no data in terms of Bing... if Bing could just get 10-15% more marketshare it would help a lot. I hope they get more aggressive soon. They seem to have lost all of their fight. All they have to do is fundamentally reject Google's culture of penalties and they could easily take a big slice of the market.

I frequently see meta keywords correlating for ecommerce keywords. In this particular study it did not correlate:

But when you switch to a search term like "used cars" you get a very different outcome:

I often suspect that "industry beliefs" in SEO mess up SEO.

why would penalties affect which search engine people prefer to use?

@validseo
Fantastic data. I had something similar going on a while back, though much smaller scale, using SEO Tools for Excel to harvest top 10 positions for any given keyword I was targeting.
I was then comparing length of content, number of instances of keyword in meta title etc etc. Never took it that step further to do it in larger amounts and actually calculate correlations, but may have to revisit based on this!

@bartosimpsonio in a nutshell:

1.Spread scary hat seo about Google dismantling your PBN's, and tracking your SEO clients/packages/strategies from their services like Gmail, Google docs/spreadsheets/adsense/analytics etc.

2.When confronted with facts, start the one liner frenzy comebacks going full-scary-retard on the assailants, because nothing could be further from the truth than the bullshit @bartosimpsonio spreads.

3.If attacks keep escalating, pull a @mickyfu esque reply , confronting the assailants with a dumb-enough question such as: "How many of you are there tonight, you must be {INSERT PREVIOUSLY BANNED USERNAME} with a brand new account"

4.Rinse and repeat spreading more scary hat seo

@bartosimpsonio intellect = protozoan

You created yet another account just to attack me? Because I warned others about using Gmail and Google Docs?

You seem really passionate about using Gmail and Google Docs for your SEO reports. You're a free man (woman?), you can do whatever you want, why don't you just keep using those?

I'm just a guy on a forum, no need to rally your brigade of fake users just to attack me.

Google was built on the testimony of technical evangelists. Google's successor will be built on the same evangelism. If you get all the website owner/operators telling their friends and families to use Bing because it not only helps them out but it makes for a better society then you can take a pretty big bite.

If I were Bing Id say this:

At Bing we want your business to be successful. We understand that many small businesses face hard times and we understand that you need to do what you think is right to succeed. We may not always agree with your choices. We may not reward your choices but we will never penalize you for doing what you think is right to survive. Bing is here to help. Additionally we feel there is no greater example of free speech on the Web than your right to link to whoever you want. No government, dictator, monopoly, or tyrant should be in a position to dictate who, how, when, or why you choose to link. That is why at Bing our algorithms reward good behavior. As long as we aren't obligated by law we have no interest in punishing choices we may disagree with. We hope you'll come join us and support us in this mission to put freedom back in the web.

Then I'd get celebs like Morgan Freeman to deliver the new mission in TV ads.

And that would only be the opening volley. The rest of the campaign would get even better. Google wouldn't know what hit them.

Wait till I bring my drones of 100's of accounts to come and attack you sideways on every single one of your reply. You aren't going to know what hit you!

Holy shit.

Awesome study, but i'd be aware of false positives.

popular content gets liked and linked more often. Or people who know SEO are more likey to use Google Plus (but it's actually not Google plus that gets them ranked, but the good offpage seo).
Same could be true for the H2 thing.
Or the year in page title. Google is known to prefe recent content and recent content is more likely to have a year number in the title, but it's actually the puplication date that matters.

So basically, wouldn't you have to find yet another correlation to a known ranking factor like backlinks?

Very true that correlation isn't causation, but if it doesn't correlate it probably isn't causal. So when you reduce the field of possibilities from hundreds of factors to the 2 dozen that correlate your guesses on what work might move the needle get a whole lot better.

well
the freedom line is good
but regular folks dont really understand this whole penalty/linking thing
but i agree about the freedom angle
kind of like what ddg is trying to do, but bing has the money to reach the masses

No doubt they could eat away at Google if they took this angle.
DDG has definitely been seeing pretty solid growth from the looks of things with this approach.
Sharing this mainly for the graph in the middle:

it would be interesting if a company with cash would buy ddg
ideally a company that ppl trust
bc the climate right now is ripe for it
plenty of angry americans who hate the idea of being tracked/followed by the govt
