Keywords?

I'm still getting my head around SEO.

I don't understand the importance of keywords. When paying for SEO services such as

they ask for a list of keywords.

- What are these used for?
- Should I always use the same keywords?

These keywords will be used as your anchor text for the backlinks that will be created to your site.

Can I use any random keywords?
Or use the exact same ones every time.

For example if i want to rank on google for Website Traffic I would always use the anchor text as Website Traffic? or vary the words?

I didn't look at the research tools so I'm not making a recommendation one way or another about that. The book looks to be pretty thorough though about explaining the point of keywords and how to determine which will be best for your own SEO.

You don't necessarily want to choose keywords that you just think people will be searching for. You actually want to go look and make sure people actually are searching for them. It's also important to know how many people are searching for them and more importantly an idea of how many other websites are targeting those terms themselves.

You also want to stay fairly targeted to just a few keywords when you're doing an automated blast. The point in making blasts is to help you rank for specific terms so you'll get better results if you don't try to rank for too many terms at the same time. Take it step by step and work on getting ranked for each term before moving on to the next.

Peter, the short answer is Keywords are the channels you want to use for driving targeted traffic to your site from Search Engines (for the most part). So when someone types in that keyword on Google YOUR ORGANIC LISTING shows in the 1st 3 spots. You are trying to get front and center to drive the click to your site.

Your goal / challenge is to find keywords that you can rank on the 1st page of Google. That is the whole trick, because if you pick the wrong keywords all your downstream efforts (link building) won't have much of an impact, been there done that one

Once you find the high search volume, low competition keywords use some of the backlink ranking techniques discussed here on BH to move your Organic Listing to the top of page 1. If you can do that you'll have a highly targeted traffic source that you can write specific copy for so they'll convert. Think sales funnel.

Okay I understand now. I paid for keyword research before which turned out useless.
Is it possible to pay someone to find the absolute, best keywords to use?

I would like to start of on the right track.

Peter, I hear where your coming from but my best advice to you is to educate yourself on keyword research. Without that foundation you won't know if what you are getting for your $$$ is worth it. I know like in Golf, everyone has an opinion but remember your goal from the search engine perspective is page 1 rankings. In brief the characteristics of great keywords are high search volume, low competition. Specifically, low Google index count (kind of important), low "allintitle and allinurl" values (more important) and top 10 organic listings which are movable. At least that is my opinion. If you click on my link "discover keywords you can rank on the 1st page of google" it will take you to a keyword research tutorial video. I would recommend you watch it. Whether you use the tool or not you should learn something. Another avenue is the thread "http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/white-hat-seo/333317-keyword-research-btb-way.html" under the White Hat forum. Different (manual) approach but well thought out. Also, the folks at Market Samurai have some good videos on keyword research. They are along the same lines as myself but their tool is different. Remember keyword research forms the foundation of everything that comes down stream. You really do need to educate yourself on it.

After reading your question, I asked myself is this guy asking the importance of keywords in SEO? I mean keywords are the backbone of your site and they determine how your site should rank in what place. They should be used in the title, description and content as anchor text so that they get noticed by the Search Engines.
