Keyword Ranking, the next level?

I am in this SEO field for a pretty long time and one of my friend working in a SEO firm asked me to have a look at this new site


My friend who has been working in a project with his team to rank for the keyword term "SEO Company UK" has found some difficulty since 3 months and yet below 25th position. And all top 10 sites that are ranked for this keyword have some good backlinks, good domain age and a decent On-page optimization.

It is not easy to rank for this keyword so easily and these guys which i have mentioned above have ranked for this competitive niche very easily and now on the 2nd spot. They are just launched,new domain and just 3 backlinks. How the hell did they get up there?

The funny part is my friend has mailed them saying that he has a site and he wanted it ranked. In reply they have asked for 2 options whether you wanted it rank with backlinks or without backlinks. As far as i am concerned to rank for a compeitive niche you need some good backlinks. And i am very curious to know how did this people rank quickly with no backlinks and what does it mean they saying"You want to rank without backlinks".

When my friend has asked how would you rank without backlinks they have said "No Thank you" .

Any clues how they did it?

"SEO Company UK" is not that competitive at all. Only 21,400 results returned. That wouldnt be too difficult to rank for with only a few backlinks.

Yes it seems not competitive with less search results with double quotes but it is really somewhat competitive keyterm. If you look at the top 100 results most of the sites use keyword "SEO Company UK" in title and url and are yet having trouble to rank for this keyword.

Though it seems not competitive it is competitive. Let us keep that aside what about getting ranked without backlinks mean?

I just checked a keyword that I am working on and there are 7 million results for it. I'm somewhat new to the game and was just wondering what it would take (# of links, time) to get a position on page 1 for something like this? What if the term only had 1 million results?
