Keyword Practice & Keyword Tools!

I am currently trying to better the SEO for my website.
I used the keyword tool on google adwords to find keywords/phrases that are relevant to my website. After searching several "Exact" keywords relevant to my website, i choose 10 keywords with alot of monthly searches, but not too much as im starting out & i think it will be slightly easier to get better rank in the less used keywords. I also checked the competition on each keyword/phrase & went for low - med competition. I then added these keywords into my website/webpage <head> & then started to build article, blog, forum & web-directory back-links to my website using the keywords/phrases i choose as the anchor text in the backlinks.
This is as much as i have done so far regarding keyword targeting.

Is there anything about what iv done that you would consider wrong?
Is there anything else that i should do to improve what iv done already?
Is there something that im not doing in regards to keyword targeting that i should be doing to help improve my results in the top search engines?

Please comment on this thread with your thoughts as im quite new to the SEO game & will appreciate any help, tips, information, etc.. given to me! Thanks!

Hi,

The first thing to remember when using the Google keyword tool is that it's geared at adwords advertisers so the 'competition' is referring to the adwords competition and not the actual search engine competition for regular websites.

What sort of volume are you referring to for your search volume? The best thing to do would be to gather a group or 8-12 related keywords with a combined total of say 2,000-3,000 exact searches per month. These will be long tail keywords each getting around 100-200 exact searches per month on average. Each keyword will be easier to rank than going after massive search volume keywords which are most likely uber-competitive. You can go after these when you have more SEO experience and learn more.

Take the time to learn keyword research properly as it's so important. I recommend heading over to the market samurai website and watching all the videos on keyword research there. Very detailed and educational videos. I still re-visit them from time to time to refresh myself before starting a new campaign. You can also download a free trial of the program at the site so why not give that a whirl too??

Hey..
When you say "long tail keywords", how long areyou taking? 2 - 3 words in the keyphrase or more?

I didnt know that about the google keyword tool, but now i think about it, it makes sense as the tool is on Adwords, lol. I indeed thought that what the Competition on the searches rather than for advertisers on adwords.

PS: It is a forum im doing the SEO on, so i have loads & loads of pages for my website.
Should i just link build for targeted keywords/phrases for my homepage?
Because i dont reckon its possible to find 8- 10 keywords/phrases for 1000s of pages then build links to all of them.

"long tail keywords" does not mean that they are long in writing

It means that you've got few main keywords and a load of others which give you relatively small number of visits. ("the tail").
Take a look at the picture of so called normal distribution. Big in the middle, smaller and smaller on both sides (these are tails).

What picture?
So are you saying have a keyword with lots of searches & then a few more with less searches?

This is only the competition for the keywords when using google adwords.

learning keyword research is tough to masters.. you need to have your own metric and you have to test your metric. It will take months or years to practice good keyword research without relying any automated software. I do use software for my keywords research but I also verify them with my own metrics manually (it would take me at least three days to complete a campaign's kw research).

Right, the simplest way to do this invest $37 or something in Ultimate niche finder (or go for TT free edition). The software is pretty simple to use, and you can find many good keywords. Ones that are very easy to rank for.

Exactly. You will find loads of very strange keyword which will bring you something like 2 visits a month.

So for my xbox forum homepage i will choose..
- 1 keyword/phrase with a really high number of searches,
- 2 keywords/phrases with high number of searches,
- 3 keywords/phrases less than that,

How many keywords/phrases will i have for each page on my forum?

Do you know of any tools which can be used to keep track of what keywords i targeting for each page, etc.. ?
