Keyword Difficulties.

Seen a few threads recently where people are asking which keyword tool to use, to choose and which is best or most accurate.

This is a very quick demo as to why these tools are not the be all and end all.

Ahrefs ; KD 1


So, 2 links from good websites and the job is done?

Next was KW finder;


Showing a Still Easy, and scoring 25%. This shows some pretty high DA sites in the top 10.


Keysearch is next.


So here the bigger picture unfolds. Not only are there some powerful high DA sites here, they are quite well optimized too. 41% and moderate competition.



Let's look at Keyword Revealer:




At 45%, Somewhat High Competition again we can see which sites are optimised and what for.


Last but no means least SEMrush




As you can see huge difference here, showing a KD of 81.05%.

Different tools have different search options, such as global, by country, by language.


Just for fun here are the KGR Results.




I use all these tools, but Ahrefs I don't use for KD, I use it for reverse engineering sites.

KW finder I love for finding long tails.

Keysearch and Keyword Revealer I prefer as they give a bigger insight into the onsite of the competing domains.

Semrush I tend not to use that much.

The KGR tool is great, especially for very low competition long tails.


One thing with Ahrefs for keyword checking is traffic for the top sites in SERPS:




All these tools have trials, take them for a test drive, do your own testing and research. See which one(s) suit your needs and of course your budget.

IS there any specific reason (s) why? I'm mostly using it for our local keywords and it seems to be good.

Yeah it's hard to trust any metric from any tool really. I found a web 2.0 the other day and ahrefs said it was DR 2 and majestic said TF 43..

Good tutorial but is therr cheaper alternative?

I haven't renewed my plan as I used it so little would be the most honest answer I guess. It's more accurate I'd say than Ahrefs but I don't go by Ahrefs scores either.

Not really, that kind of data comes with a price tag. Plus you can mess with any type of keyword, even if you don't rank, you will learn something new.

Newbie question: how do these tools estimate the monthly searches for a KW and consequently the monthly clicks from it for a specific site appearing in the SERP?

I also know for a fact their volumes are shit.. none of them are accurate.. sometimes they will show 0 but then type that keyword in google and the auto-suggest pops
if the search volume is literally 0 who typed it enough times to google so they know ppl search for that kw? lol

The most important thing to do with all those metrics is to understand how each of these tools compute them (when they disclose it). That way you can better understand when to use them or not, what are the limitations of each metric. And of course if they are not disclosing how they compute their difficulty metric, it's useless : they might as well show me random number between 0 and 100...

Either from Google Ads API or from clickstream data or both.

It is interesting, isn't it?

No matter which tool you use, you will always find a huge variation.

It does also seem, to me at least, that as Google continues to change their algo's the more these research tools seem out of wack.

A couple of terms I am aiming for now have sites in the top 10, but only 1 of them is even close to authority. The rest are just single page websites, max of 10 links to the page, although the home pages have an average of 1 - 200.

Content on each sites single page is around 500 words. My article is going to be 3k...

Outsource the work.

It's fine picking a niche/topic, but if the keywords you are going after are going to be difficult to rank for, then you're kinda wasting your time.

Some people go for huge search numbers, without looking at the true competition numbers etc.

There's a whole bunch of search operators you can use.

I would prefer Ahrefs as it can give you an even bigger picture; SERP competition, DRs of competitors, how much traffic they get from keyword and from which position, etc.

No tool is perfect, not even Ahrefs - it's just better than others in my opinion;

So, manual research is still the best?

Scores aside, Is not as reliable as ahrefs (in my experience)

Is the KGR tool Allintitle.co or what? The site's down atm so can't check, don't remember it looking like that but can't find anything else.

For me, the manual work is the way to go, it takes time but better than Ahrefs

I am sorry, but what conclusion did you reach into?

Is the keyword easy to rank or difficult or moderate. With too much data and different data, I fail to assume a conclusion. Obviously I am a newbie in this.

You obviously are a sensei when it comes to KW research. Do you still outsource this or do it by yourself? Who are your fav providers for this type of work?
Any plans to write a kw research guide?
