I love netfleets monitor for keyword related domains.
What I don't love is when you buy a domain, then the company that owned it before you calls you up asking for it back LOL.
Especially when you had built a few backlinks to it, and it was top of page 2 within a few days for a competitive keyword term.
Ah well im so nice I gave it back to them. Some black hatter I am right?

why we're all here on the thread, i know someone here will see this, although it's not really related...
question - i'm working on a site that is for australians... do i need to host it in australia? does it make a difference? any difference with trying to rank it in google AU?
just trying to work out my options. it's heaps cheaper to host it elsewhere, but if it means harder to rank, then maybe it's no good.

Yeah host it in AU. Just dont host it with like melb IT or web central, they are garbage.
I cant even setup a god damn wordpress site for a client on web central at the moment. Its taken their technicians about 5 days just to setup a mysql DB and put the data into it. No Cpanel = ultimate fail.
are you going to use a .au domain too yeah? I would suggest doing so but you will need an ABN to buy one. Im sure there is a way around that though.

how closely related to your business name does the domain need to be? i've heard conflicting answers on that. some people say you can register whatever you want, others say you can't.

Now it all depends on where you register it. Ive registered multiple domains that are not even remotley close to my actual real business with no problems. Actually I think one time they denied it, I cant remember if it was them though it was a while ago.
You want to use a host with Cpanel, especially if you are newish to wordpress (or if you even want to use wp?). There is a tool called fantastico build into it that allows you to setup the latest version of WP in about 3 clicks and 10 seconds.

yeah, i've used cpanel on hostgator, and i like it. i've used wordpress with hostgator but this site that i'm doing is a joomla site. it' not finished yet (i've got it on my computer), but i'm going to have to find a host to upload it to pretty soon.

hey fizzik! adelaide might be small, but there's a few of us
I go with VentraIP, they are the cheapest in Australia $19.95 registration/renewal. A few of the others flaunt $20-$25 for two years but then hike it when you go to renew.
Also host with them with the server in Brisbane, unlimited addon domains for a very small hosting fee.

In my experience so far I've never had any ranking issues with pages that have .com.au hosted overseas.
Though saying that I do have domains hosted in datacentre's in Aus and the connections are really quick, usually also if your willing to pay a bit more you get shell access which is a big bonus for me as I prefer to do things via ssh if I can as opposed to ftp/sftp.
