So a few months back I was asked to build a website (it's a blog) for a friend, but I turned it down because of personal reasons. Now, about 7 months later this is a large site and only growing each day. I know for a fact that the guys who run the site don't know much about anything about building backlinks and I would be surprised if they have built backlinks on purpose ("accidental" backlinks like scraping content, etc aside, they only have 40 and none of them are high quality).

The only thing they do is add fresh, unique content each day, maybe 10 posts a day, each post consisting of 250 words on average and usually a video or picture. For each post they create a new Facebook post and Tweet about it.

They really don't focus on any specific keywords for SEO, pretty much all they're traffic comes from social networks, but I think it's important to note that they're now a PR 2 and Google has recognized the importance of their site by giving them sitelinks in the SERPs (if you don't know what it is, here is a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sitelink).

What I'm trying to convey is that these guys know nothing about SEO, but they're gaining Google's trust and they don't even know it. Just by having a lot of fresh, unique content each day and posting on Facebook and Twitter they're creating an authority site in Google.

If you're going to take away anything from this it's that you should start focusing on on-site SEO and LEGITIMATE social signals rather than building crappy backlinks that everyone and their mother are building. Backlinks are important, but I think that with Panda and Penguin, Google is looking for people that aren't trying to do SEO and game the system, but rather "stumble upon it" if you will.

Some of you may say that, "well they're not ranking for any keywords, so therefore it's useless," but let me tell you that these guys know very little about SEO and aren't doing anything to target keywords, not even throw the keywords throughout each post. If they did I guarantee they would be dominating whatever they wanted to.

SEO is changing and if you continue to do the old SEO you won't get anywhere, you need to change the game as Google is changing. Good luck :)

Where are you going to find 2500 words unique content everyday?

They have a bunch of representatives that write the content for them. I think they have something like 50 reps, but they're all university students so it's not much for them to write a small piece of content every few days, especially about something they enjoy. They don't get paid though, so I'm not sure how they keep them motivated.

And FYI, you don't find the content, you write it from scratch :)

It's the music industry. There is always fresh content because producers and musicians are always putting out new music.

So content is still the king rather king kong. Google will always weigh the sites on the basis of content.

Yes unique & engaging content always draws traffic to a blog! But to post 5-10 post a day even they 250 words will be a tough task to do & most of us have websites on niches that we have never heard of or have very little knowledge.

If you have very little knpwledge then hire somebody to write for you. There are so many good serivces with good price for the service itself.
What I know and have payed attention is that video gives a good impression to google. So, if you post high quality content and add a video your chances get bigger. Good luck

For something like a music blog it is obviously important as other players in the industry hammer out hundreds of articles a week to keep readers interested but for most niches online, producing 5-10 articles a day on the subject is going to be very difficult, even if they're written for free.

Maybe they do well because they don't stuff as much content on for no reason like others do if they're trying to rank for something competitive.

If you have something really compelling - either a product or content, the site will promote itself somewhat. If your visitors are very happy with what they find on your website, you'll definitely see organic growth without much backlinking effort at all. I've had projects which have seen such results, and I must say, it's my favorite way of doing SEO. :)

I am following a similar strategy. It will be nice to see how things go further.

Yeah I think I'm going to start focusing on just content rather than building backlinks and see where that leads me. This site is doing extremely well and I think most large sites like it (Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc). I should mention that they also do a lot of social media and that is probably where a good amount of their traffic comes from, but I have no doubt that if they do decide to go the Google route soon, they have built a very good foundation for themselves.

Good quality content IS king... I just learned this the other day:

I've been running this blog promoting some Clickbank products, making a few sales per week. Not bad, but could be better. I'm a total newbie at SEO. I kind of rushed into making the site and didn't research the keywords properly, so I don't even have a list of targeted keywords. But I write all the articles myself, and it's a niche that I actually knew something about, and I've learned more and more in the course of researching for this site. I'm actually pretty into it now, not just for the money either.

The other day, I get this email from one of the biggest sites in the niche. They want to publish some of my articles on their site (with a link back to my site, of course) They just set it up a day or two ago, so we'll see how that affects my traffic, but that site gets half a million views per day, so I'm guessing I'll see a huge spike in my traffic.

Quality content, people! Either make it yourself, or get it made by someone who does a good job!

unique, original content is very helpful...and remember to interlink your posts to distribute authority throughout your site...

interlinking within your site is very important...do this to create an authority site...

Anyone clarify this? I've read that this technique has died out in recent google algos.
